- Something in your description doesn't add up. Mercruiser did not have a motor branded as 170 hp in 1978, only 85-86. The 224s where a Mercury invention, all about the same for around 15 years. Do you you have a ser #, much more accurate identification.
- Q: Okay so earlier, I went to go test out my water pump and all on my 66 mustang 302. And I got it up to normal operating temp, and had the rad cap off. I gave it some gas, the coolant level didn't go down, instead it came out the rad pretty badly. I've been having overheating problems, and I have no leaks, i just replaced the thermostat a few days ago, it didn't help. I haven't seen any leaks around the weep hole on the water pump, or noises. Other than a belt that does need to be tightened a bit, you can hear the belt squeling a tiny bit. So do yall think it could be my water pump?

- the pump does what it say pump.... it flows thru the radiator to the block and back ..... if you having a problem with heat then it could be stoped up and need a new one .... over heating therostat.... id say yes it sucks thru the motor if the hose is hook to the motor

- Yes he should have replaced it. It was pretty stupid for him not to replace it. Everything was taken apart and the thermostat was right there. Now he's going to undo everything he did, have you pay more for gaskets and coolant, replace what he should have replaced in the first place and then put it back together while your without a car for a few more days. If I were you I'd find a competent mechanic.

- I don't think so. Replacing the water pump on most modern cars is not the cheapest thing to do, though it's often near the timing belt which needs to be replaced every 60,000 miles too. I would walk away from this one. Doesn't sound right to me - or it better be a grand or two or three under blue book as you've got some repairs to do before you can drive it. The reason he hasn't replaced the water pump is because it aint' cheap to do so.
