Solid Acacia Flooring

Q: I am building a new house, and I have two large dogs. The house is a $200k smaller home with very nice appliances, granite counter tops, etc. Anyways, I have two large dogs who have scratched up the hardwood(not terribly) in my condo, so I am thinking about putting in the engineered flooring. I have been to lumber wholesalers, and it isn't really much cheaper than hardwood, but it is my understanding that it is much more durable. It seems to look and feel like hardwood, and I have heard that the engineered floors have come a long way, but I'm paranoid that it's going to look cheap. Would putting in the engineered flooring be a mistake?: Engineered flooring ERK. Sorry, but it makes me so uneasy that I feel nauseous. At least, with Hardwood, if it needs sanding or refinishing you can do it multiple times which you just can't with a laminated product. I've just seen an engineered floor that was put in last year that has lifted in places during some humid weather ...kind looks like it's billowing. It's just a personal opinion but if you have real wooden floors you should cherish them and all their faults ....mmmmm Wood

Q: In flooring, which is better: solid hardwood or engineered hardwood?: I've had both, just had a solid hardwood installed, way nicer!!! No doubt, it is more expensive, but not much. It was a quick and fairly clean install, installers have great tools, so even the sanding was quick and as clean as possible. Solid all the way!!

Q: I need to match the engineered hardwood from Summitt Forest (Mendocino, American Walnut 5in wide, 0.5 inch thick, Autumn Harvest color). Has anyone else done this before? If you have can you share a close match?: We had engineered floors in our Cary home. I hated them, but that's another story (but I agree with your husband--keep your tile in the kitchen because one drop of water did damage ours). I was told that ours could be refinished once (not sure about changing the color). You need to check with whoever installed yours about that. But, if you did refinish the existing floors you may never be able to do it again. Personally, if you're committed to putting down engineered floors, I'd stick with the same color unless you want to tear out what you already have.

Q: Shoud it be installed first or last? I am installing it on stairs with carpet, how do I secure the top of the carpet under the stair nose?: Dupont makes a pretty good product.

Q: 1. I live on the 14th floor of a 60 year old building. Would I need a moisture barrier?2. I want to glue hardwood to cork underlayment and float the cork underlayment over the concrete. Is this possible or advisable?: I would use cork underlayment which works really good for sound deading purposes. If you go with the cork underlayment then you need to go with a floating floor. Locking hardwoods provide this option as well as using a regular engineered tongue and groove hardwood. If you go with the tongue and groove engineered you'll need to make sure it is at least 4 wide and use must glue the boards together with tongue and grove adhesive. So you float the floors but they are glued together. This option or going with an engineered lockign hardwood are your best options.

Q: I was told a thick layer of polyurethane glue works just as well as cork for sound proofing for hardwood floors on above ground levels.: Nooooo...engineered wood flooring is MUCH louder it produces a hollow sound.

Q: I am laying 5 1/2 inch Thomasville Mahagony Engineered wood flooring. Occasionally I do not get them as snug as I would like, but most of the time it is a nice fit. Is this ok, or should I panic?: I don't know about panicking. But if you don't get the gaps out as you lay the floor, they will always be there. If you can live with the gaps, then don't worry.
