- You will need about 22 yards. You can figure that by assuming that you will buy piece of carpet that is 15 feet wide (they come 12' and 15' wide-using 15' wide will avoid having to piece the carpet). 15' wide will go in one direction. You then divide the other measurement 13.5' by 3' and get 4.5'. Now divide 15' by 3' =5'. Now multiply 4.5x5=22.5. That is how many yards you will need if you get carpet that is 15' wide. - Q: my brother spilled water on the carpet and instead of drying it up he just threw a towel over it and left it all night. now the carpet smells really bad of mildew. i tried washing it with soap and water and it helped a little. i tried febreeze but that did no good. i don't have a steam carpet cleaner.
- The carpet just sat overnight and now smells of mildew? Wow. First you need to kill the mildew. I would spray it with Lysol so that you saturate the wet spot. You need to make sure that the padding underneath the carpet will be clean and dry, so you may even need to lift up the carpet to check the padding. If the water has saturated through to the padding, you need to Lysol that too. Then blot it with a towel to get as much of the moisture out as possible, and turn a fan on that spot and leave it for a couple of days until you are sure it is completely dry. Then work some baking soda into the carpet and vacuum it up.

- I would not use a bit of carpet, unless you can find some berber or very short staple carpet. If you have an Ikea nearby you can get pretty cheap rugs there- especially in the as is room where their floor models and slightly damaged goods go. If you have them, check stores like Sams and Costco, Marshall's, Ross, Big Lots, and TJ Maxx. They have great discount deals. Also consider making your own floor cloth. You will need a painter's canvas drop cloth, some no-sew hem tape (the kind you iron on) and a bit of non-skid rug padding, and some paints. It's pretty cheap and you can customize it. I got lots of how-to's and ideas by just googling how to floor cloth
- Q: dried into wool rug
- steam clean the rug and then apply a product called Urine Gone. it works really well. After about an hour or so, stem clean the rug again.
