- Just for giggles...I would fill the soap reservoir with clean water and go over the carpet again, basically.....giving it a thorough rinse. Then, after it dried, I would get a stiff brush and comb the carpet....you can use a shop broom (a clean one!) or a hand brush if you're willing to have it take a bit more time. You need to rough up the fibers for it to stay fluffy!

- Not necessarily , but it can be. Berber by it s construction you don t see any wear because your walking on the loops. It will mat and crush because it usually , but not always made w/ a softer yarn called Olefen. So check your warranty info on the back of all carpets to compare.They ll add nylon in it to get colors in the yarn because Olefin is a natural stain blocker but a softer, not as tough as nylon. You ll find cheap berbers and expensive ones. If you have pets, give it a 2nd look, since 1 loose or snagged loop (pet nails) and a whole row can be zipped right out via a cat or a vacuum.When picking ANY carpet, get the correct pad and the poundage to match.Minimum 3/8 and 8# pad for berber and 7 / 16 ths and 5 1/2# pad for regular carpet. - Q: Carpeting a 1400 sq. ft. office. Price is an issue. I would like to lay them directly on plywood floor (no 1/4quot; underlyment). Will plywood seams show through? - you can lay carpet tile onto plywood and yes you should definitely glue them down. without glue the tiles will be all over the place. here is a tip. when you lay the tiles down rotate every other tile 1/4 turn so that it makes like a checkerboard pattern. you will have a much better cover and it will hide any imperfections in the carpet tiles.

- Yes, my daughter. Depending on the materials and such the carpet and padding can be treated with all kinds of chemicals to water or stain proof it or fire retardants and such. The material that the carpet is made out of can cause problems. Synthetic fibers in the carpet and the foam in the carpet padding can be the source of the problem. For my daughter it was dust mites and the foam padding. If stored in a moist warehouse the carpet could also have mold spores but just enough for the allergy stricken. If you haven't had allergy problems before then do several deep cleanings of your carpet and use an anti-allergy wash. Your local allergist can hook you up with a list of products and providers.

- Practice - practice - practice First, the carpet pieces all need the fibers going in the same direction....if you can't do that, it won't matter how skilled you are at seaming a carpet, the piles running different dirctions will stand out. Clean cuts - you need a clean cut along the seam, on BOTH pieces to get them to look good when they are joined. Two kinds of tape - adhesive, and 'carpet' tape (which needs a seaming iron). BEFORE the carpet is stretched for the room, the adjacent pieces of carpet need to be joined. This involves making a straight, clean cut on both edges - this cut should match identically. I achieve this by overlapping the two pieces, and using a straight edge, cut through both layers at once. (You need a VERY sharp blade). Next, apply the seaming tape to the underside of the carpet. I prefer to use the professional grade carpet tape, and I own all the necessary carpet tools to do this. If you do not own them, they can be rented from a local business that rents tools and equipment. I wouldnt make the investment in tools for one room of carpet. If you are using carpet tape, cut it to fit the length of the seam (actually allow it to extend beyond the ends of the seam, for a couple of inches) Plug in the seaming iron, allow it to heat up, and then place it UNDER the carpet, but ON the tape. As the seaming iron heats up the tape, slide it along the length of the seam, pulling the carpet edges together behind it, and press them firmly into the tape. (A roller is handy for this) Do NOT overlap the edges, do NOT allow them to pucker...this is why a good clean cut is so important. Allow the tape to cool, and then you can stretch the carpet and trim it out. Have Fun

- Q: My husband and I just moved into yet another rental. The carpet is decent; it's a little stained, but VERY worn in high traffic areas. We have tried everything from having them professionally cleaned to cleaning each inch with a toothbrush (a trick my local flooring salesman gave to make the carpet fibers separate and puff back up). We live in a college town where rent is very high and are so sick of being embarrassed of our carpets. Any suggestions on how to fix this or cover it up?It's a medium pile, standard beige. We HATE area rugs because our furniture makes them wrinkle up (but I'm also very attached to my furniture so I'm not getting rid of that) and I really want a nice smooth look. Even the huge 8x10 area rugs won't stay nice and flat. I looked into carpet tiles, but you can't install those over carpet and my landlord has refused to change it or let me change it. I'm really at the end of my rope here....I just want a nice, clean apartment that I can be proud to show off.
