- Good luck with that one. You could try buying a cat repellant spray but not all cats are offended by it. (Didn't work with mine) I just gave up after awhile. A spray bottle might do the trick. I taught my cats to stay off the table this way. I filled up a spray bottle (buy one from the dollar store, DO NOT use a spray bottle that has had chemicals in it) and every time your cats go on the rug spray them with the spray bottle. Works great.

- You MIGHT be able to. First you have to determine what it is made of. If it is 100% wool, cotton or nylon, these fibers will all accept dyes. However, most area rugs are acrylic, polyester or olefin fibers and will NOT absorb dye. They are essentially plastic and are colored during manufacturing useing noxious chemical dyes that you could not use. If you can determine that it is made of a dye-absorbing fiber, you can rent a small sprayer and air compressor from a tool rental place and use good aniline dye (not Rit dye that goes in the washer). You can buy this dye at hobby stores like Joanns and Michaels. You would have to do the job outdoors , preferably in your yard or driveway, with a painters disposable tarp underneath. Follow directions with the spray gun and spray it with even strokes. My mom dyed a couple of rugs we had this way when I was younger. I will warn you that the results may not be exactly what you want. Black will likely turn out grey -- it is hard to get a deep consistent tone this way. It really might be better to sell it on Craigslist and then use the money to buy a new one that matches.

- theres a product called OdoBan. In my area it is available at walmart and menards. not sure if you have those where you are but I have found it to be effective. Nothing is going to take the odors out completely, your going to have to work diligently to keep pets from having accidents on the carpet. main reason I no longer have pets. lol.

- We clean our carpets once a year. But if it needs it more often we would clean them. We have children so, sometimes it is necessary to clean them every 6 months. We have had them for a few years and there is a lot of dust that is sand colored that doesn't go away easily even with vacuuming. My mom thinks its just backing from the rug and it's normal.
