They are extremely difficult to remove, unless the cleaner has a machine called a Rug Badger. These machines vibrate the rug with high intensity vibrations over a stainless steel grid to remove the dirt/soil/ powders, contaminating the rug. Not every carpet cleaner has these machines as they are expensive. Therefore do not administer powder additive cleaners to the rug, as they will be there forever.

- It may be an issue of what your rug is made of. I had a similar problem with a synthetic rug and I had to hang it outside for weeks to get the stink out of it (we'd used a steam cleaner 4 times on it so we knew it was clean). Make sure you've gotten all the soap out of the carpet because that can actually attract more dirt! Also try cleaning the surface the rug was on. Sometimes the smells can get trapped there too.
