- Q: Instead of paying an astronomical amount of money to Terminex etc, is there a cheaper way to bugproof my home against termites, ants etc. Also the ones that fly into open doors such as mosquitos and flys???
- Ortho has a product called Home Defense Max Home Perimeter and Indoor Insect Killer. It sells for under $9.00 at my local K-Mart (where I work), and although I haven't used it, some of my customers swear by it. It's ad says it keeps termites away for 5 years. On another note, it is said that plastic bags filled with water will keep flies away from your open doors. There are quite a few responses to this question right here in yahoo answers - home garden.
- Q: food out there but this happens every year.the house next door have ivy which has covered our side of one of our fences and we do get a lot of snails in the winter ,could this have anything to do with our problem now?
- Go to your local home and garden center. There are fly traps available. The one I use is a gallon jug with an attractant that you mix with water. If you leave the trap in a low sunny place, you'll be grossly amazed at the number of flies it will capture. We use one only about every two years because it's so effective. They cost about $10. Good luck.

- Q: husband built a beautiful porch with planter boxes on the side I want to grow spices can anyone give me links with how to info and pictures of the plants
- You probably mean herbs, not spices. Most spices grow in tropical or subtropical areas. Herbs can be grown in the home garden in Northern America and Europe. I've listed a link for growing herbs. Just stay away from the mints-they are too invasive for a planter box.

- Q: Hi, wondering how I would go about making a living by gardening, selling seasonal fruits and veggies, selling herbs and sprouts, canned goods like sauerkraut and pickles, possibly mead and wine, eggs, and eventually things like homemade candles and soaps. Is it possible to make a living off of this? What skills would I need to learn (besides the most obvious of gardening, cooking, and creating the products)THANKS!!Also- I am single, and live very modestly. don't have extra things such as a TV, lots of clothing, never go to restaurants, etc.
- yes you can. I have been doing so for the past 15+ years. But if you do not have at least an acre of land your will have to invest in land which can be very expensive. Marketing skills are key to being successful along with the ability to keep good records. Home gardening skills will help but will not really prepare your for growing for market. Start small so you are not overwhelmed and know that to make a living you will have to farm at least 3 acres. Also do not get into the trap of trying to provide everything for everyone. This is a sure fire way to get burned out very quickly. Choose something you are good at doing and like to do well enough that you can devote 80+ hours a week to the endeavour. A market garden alone will take well over 45 hours a week of your time. Animals will take about as much time and making things like mead, beer, wine (which you will need a lot of licensing to do this legally), candles etc.. will also take around 40 hours a week. So if you want any kind of life other than being a complete slave to your farm (much less any time to sleep or eat) think about specializing a lot more than what you seem to be thinking
