Q: What is the best, and safest, insecticide to use for home vegetable gardens?: D.E. - (diatomateous earth) is a wonderful powder that deters any kind of crawly thing and is completely natural. You can buy it at any garden store in small boxes or from the pool supply store in large bags (cheaper by the pound!) As with all killing agents, please use selectively, so as not to kill any more creatures than necessary.

Q: With a the recent problems of vegtables being recalled because of E. Coli contamination is there any way to help prevent my vegtables from being contaminated too? I know that E. Coli is a bacteria naturaly found in the digestive trac of animals. Since a lot of people use munure aren't they at risk of an E. Coli contamination in thier gardens? Also E. Coli can be present in the water supply people are using to water their plants. Is the only way to know for sure to have my soil and water tested? So far the only recommendation I've found is to throughly wash vegetables before consumtion.: Good question, Home consumption is generally okay. The store bought manure has to actually go through a curing phase to help kill bacteria.(heated up in its own bacteria pile) The water used is suppose to be tested for acceptable levels of bacteria.(If government controlled). If you have your own catchment system then you are suppose to have bacteria filters as well. The recent contamination is due to poor handlling of vegetables. They did not pass the inspections that our health inspectors are suppose to give.

Q: I want to grow and sell vegetables from my garden in orange county Ca. All the farmers markets I have looked at are for certified farmers. How could I sell my produce with out being a certified farmer?: Why not grow them for your own use and just sell any extras to friends and co-workers? Or set up a farm stand in your yard. Market farming, if you want to make any money takes a lot of time to do it right. You need to learn how to both grow for market (very different than growing a home garden) and how to market because just because you grew produce does not mean anyone will buy it. You have to make sure you have enough produce to make it worth going to market and that means having on hand at least $200 worth of stuff to sell (and never expect to sell out, that happens rarely) so you can cover the costs of market fees, fuel to get to market and your time at around $5 an hour (not to mention all the time it took to grow and maintain those crops) If you have never grown a large garden (say 1/4 acre or better) than perhaps you need to work on that first.

My wife all ready has her tomatoes , peppers and lettuce in the ground.
