- I know very little beyond what is shown in showrooms and on Antiques Roadshow. Mostly they have Persian carpets, and not that much on Armenian.
- Q: I tried steaming my carpet with a Rug Doctor, and it didn't work, so I bought a Bissell Proheat. I wanted to use up all the cleaner that I bought for the Rug Doctor before I purchase Bissell carpet shampoo for my new cleaner. The shampoo for the Rug Doctor says it's compatible with all carpet cleaning machines, but the Proheat manual says only to use the Bissell products. I'm a little confused here. Should I use the Rug Doctor shampoo or not?

- It really depends on what you pick out. Synthetic is cheaper than wool. I've recarpeted the same house twice. Once I put down synthetic pile and it was under $2000. Once I put down wool berber and it was $4500. Just really depends on what you pick out. Also, if you pay someone to do the installation, they will charge for every piece of furniture they have to move, charge for pulling up and disposing old carpet, and if you have stairs, they charge extra for those.
- Q: Is it hard to remove a carpet yourself, or should i hire someone?? Im not really good at that type of thing but just wondering how hard it is. Would i need special equipment or soemthing? and how long would it take me? Thanks
- If you are not going to try and salvage the carpet, just get a razor knife and cut it up one section at a time, as much as you can handle. Once you start on one end, you can just raise up enough of the carpet to slice through and make sure you don*t cut the wood floor underneath; I*m assuming it is hardwood. You do not need any special equipment. Stop and start when ever you feel like it. 2 of us took out carpeting in a living room /dining room combo in about 8 hours. Trouble was it was full of cat pee from previous owners, and we had to keep running outside to breathe fresh air.
- Q: The rug cleaning company wants $300 to clean the rugs, $200 to deodorize them and $200 for a protection service that will help them stay clean. Are the extras worth it? We do have two cats, but our carpets don't get a lot of wear. They aren't visibly dirty, but I'd like to get them cleaned before getting some new furniture.
- If the rugs don't get a lot of wear, you don't need the protection service. The protection service charge essentially pays for most of another cleaning when you're ready to have them cleaned again. The deodorizer just leaves the house smelling ok, but it wears off. Skip the extras.
- Q: Okay, so I'm being cheap! However, I saw these really cute pink shag area rugs on sale at Target this week. I need it to be larger than the 5 x 8, so I was thinking of somehow binding the two so I would have a 10 x 16. Does anyone know if this is possible? - You could probably sew them together with rug yarn that you can get in a craft store. Depending on what the backing of the rugs are made of, this might be difficult OR, they have iron on tape that is made just for rugs. I've never seen it in the stores but I've never really looked for it either. I did see them use it on a show on HGTV. You lay the rugs face down with the joining edges against each other on the floor, place the tape evenly along the edges you want to connect, and press with a hot iron. When the joined rugs cool, turn the piece over and comb back and forth with your fingers to hide any of the new seam that night be showing.

- You generally get what you pay for of course. Look for wear and stain blocker warranties. Longer warranties is a better carpet. Don t buy the notion of the big brand stain blockers are better, They are all the same. You don t pay for the advertising dollars of the no name stain blocker. Thickness in carpet only counts in the amount of yarns per square inch . Thickness in tallness do not always make a better carpet. Its the twists per thread length that make the better carpet. The actual truth is the shorter, the tighter ( twists) the better the carpet.And if the twists are heat set in. Ask a salesperson about this. If they know or can look it up then talk more with them.
