Q: i was wondering if you can vacuum shag carpet because i am redoing my room and i always wanted shag carpet but am a neat freak so i wanted to find out if i can vacuum it. --------------------lt;3 Cassie Thanks
We moved into my husband's grandparent's former home which has two rooms with shag carpeting. I have a bagless vaccum and I set it on the 2 to lowest carpet level setting in one room and the highest in the other (that shag is sooo tall!). We've had NO problems! I'd say go for it! Also, since you are a neat freak I've also shampoo'd both rooms too! And my shampooer has no carpet height setting.
Q: I have pets. Is it okay to have a solid floor, like tile or terrazo, on my living room floor and just put a big rug on it instead of carpet? Do you thik that will hurt the resale value of the home?
I myself hate carpet in my house. I see more and more people leaving the carpet out now days. And if you have pets, if there is an accident, it is easier to clean up if there is no carpet. You can still vacuum the hard floor, and it should keep dust down in your house because you can mop it and that helps. On top of that when ever mud is brought in it is easier to get up as well.
Q: A new home I'm thinking of buying has been allotted a $16 per square yard carpet allowance by the builders. Is this low, reasonable, or high? Will this be enough to carpet the house with some of the higher end carpet such as stainmaster? Thanks!
On the low side but a normal builders allowance. When shopping for carpet, you ll be buying or comparing that price to an s/f price. This is the way carpet must be sold. The builders price break down to 1.77$ a s/f. You ll be able to get a cheap bedroom carpet for that if you look hard but none with any quality will be found. Get a carpet with a stain protector, you don t necessarily need Staimaster, although a good stain blocker, your paying some for the name. Also shop for a carpet with anti matte, anti crush. This won t matte down and show walk patterns. This differs from an anti wear warranty. Edit to your add on questions.. To start to get into any quality at all you ll have to double that amount to around 30.$ a s/y or 3.5/4$ a s/f.. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL

Q: Somehow molten candle wax got dropped in my carpet and its really hard now. How can i remove it without destroying my carpet?
The first thing you need to do is remove as much of the hardened wax as you can. A butter or putty knife works well for this but you can use anything with a dull blade. Scrape up what you can and vacuum the debris. Next place a clean cloth, paper bag or paper towel over the wax. Run a warm iron over the cloth until the wax melts. A hot hair dryer can also be used. Once the wax is melted, it should adhere to the cloth. Lift the cloth and the wax should lift with it. It should be noted that if the wax is colored, it may stain your carpet. Anytime you apply heat to a stain, it causes the stain to lock into the fibers leaving you with a permanent reminder of your clumsiness. It's for this reason you should use a warm iron only. You also don't want to use newspaper or any kind of paper with words or pictures on it unless you want the image to be transferred to your carpet.
Q: Can anyone give me some tips on how to get chocolate out of a beige carpet? I found a mysterious chocolate trail(most likely melty chocolate chips or Hershey's kisses) across my bedroom carpet. I don't really know how it got there-.-While we're on the subject...I also have a rather large shampoo stain(I didn't know shampoo STAINED carpet...but apparently it does?) and a some green nail polish spots on my floor. I know...I don't take very good care of my carpetgt;.lt;But it would be nice to have my floor looking a little fresher...Thanks in advance:)
Treating any carpet stain depends on what your carpet is made of. If it's wool or another natural fiber, it will be harder to treat these stains. If it's synthetic (most wall-to-wall carpet falls into this category), you may have an easier time. A diluted solution of brake cleaner, which contains the same chemicals that professional dry cleaning incorporates, will work to remove most food stains. This is a nasty chemical, and you have to consider whether you want the fumes in your house -- but it will do the job better than off-the-shelf carpet cleaning products. Whatever solvent you try, the method is to blot up as much of the stain as you can, wet it (with water or a cleaning solution), and blot some more. Don't rub, as this will abrade the carpet fibers and work the stain in deeper. I would try plain water on the shampoo stain before anything else. For the nail polish on the floor -- depends on what kind of floor surface you are talking about. You might try applying a non-acetone nail polish remover *just* to the polish spot, with a Q-tip. Avoid using an acetone-based remover (will damage almost any surface). If your floor is vinyl or laminate (engineered faux wood), you may have better luck trying to gently scrape it off with a table knife. Finally, if you have wall-to-wall carpeting, a professional carpet steaming service is a pretty good buy for the kind of results you get (and the work you save yourself). Consider spending a couple hundred bucks and skipping all the work. Good luck!
Q: So I'm looking for really soft, comfortable area rugs here in Toronto. But I don't want real animal fur. Fake Sheepskins, fake animal rugs. I'm just not sure where to look. Thanks in advance for your help.

Q: How to clean the glue on the carpet?
If it is chewing gum or flexible glue like double faced adhesive tape or Black & Decker glue ( full- purpose adhesive), and banana oil. use the volatile oil, but the carpet will be damaged, chloroform and hot water containing soda are the best. transformer oil and rosin water can also be used; if it is glass glue, acetic acid could be used(vinegar essence, nail color remover); if it is 502, it is afraid of heat and alkalis; if it is epoxy resin (combining of two kinds of glues), white vinegar), Fengyoujing could be used if you are afraid of pollute the air.
Q: I'm looking for a new rug for a private elementary school library. It must be clear colors, thick enough not to roll on the edges and steam-cleanable. Any ideas?
First off - Rugs/Carpet usually do not Wear out. Matting or crushing is what the consumer perceives to be wear, but it is usually a result of soil build up without proper maintenance. Your rug/carpet must be professionally steam cleaned once a year and the vacuum you use must be checked to see that the bead-er bar is functioning properly to beat at the fibers. Second - price will play a huge part in the size and type. Since this is for an elementary school and they probably do not have rug/carpet in budget, my guess is that you will be paying for it? Suggestion - go to a local carpet store and pick out the least expensive to your taste, have the store order to your size and then have it bound around the edges. You can pickup double side tape and use this to hold carpet flat. This may be your least expensive way. Good Luck.
Q: I have horses aswell, and we always put rugs on them to suit the weather conditions, but never put any rugs on the donkeys. Their coat is thick, but would getting them a rug still be a good idea to keep them warm? Its snowing where I live at the minute, and its meant to be getting even colder soon!
If they have lived all their lives without rugs then they wont need them. The majority of horses do not need rugs, people just think that they do. A horse or donkey can regulate its temperature very well, by putting a rug on you are actually stopping their bodies from working properly. The only time I would put rugs on is if it constantly rains/snows and they live outside with no shelter, otherwise they will keep themselves warm and happy as long as they have enough to eat.
