- Q: I have a large square area rug (12x16ish), it has different colored (brown, blue, burgundy, tan, etc.) squares all over it. It got left out side in the weather most of the winter. If I were to dry it out and clean it could I do anything to make it nicer? Like, could I paint it or something? I put it outside in the first place because it was starting to get thin in spots and some of it was faded. t had to be vacuumed all the time because it was like colored dry rotted thread dust was coming off of it. I was wondering if anyone could come up with some last resort ideas before I take it to the dump. I'm not really sure if it could be painted because its like carpet???? but is there a type of vacuum-able fabric or something I could glue to it or any ideas like that?
- sounds like the rug is pretty much worn out, I think the only thing you could do would be to make small door mats from the areas that are still somewhat in good shape and throw the rest away. Once a material has become so degraded as you describe, there is is no way to save it, plus it only makes cleaning and maintenance more difficult because it is constantly falling apart right under your feet.
- Q: Water from a faulty air conditioner dripped onto a small area of the fitted carpet in our bedroom. The patch is no longer wet, perhaps slightly damp, but the smell is horrible. Any advice please. Changing the carpet is not an option.
- If you have decided to let the carpet dry in place you can get borax powder and work it into the pile of the carpet and then let it sit for a few hours. Then you can vacuum it up. Most of the smell should be gone. Any residue just helps fireproof the carpet. Lysol spray disinfectant will stop further mold formation. Febreze will help. A portable fan directed on the area will help a lot.
- Q: What if I went to Home Depot and bought a sheet of rubber cut to just a bit less than 8' x 10' and then a piece of felt the same size - glue them together and pop the area rug on top?Would that work?
- Hi Blue Eyed Homo, I am a flooring associate that works at The Home Depot, and I know that some rug pads seem to be expensive, especially in your size. I've worked in other departments and been with the company for almost 10 years and I have yet to see a sheet of rubber that will sell in the store other than pan liner for tubs that would work in your situation. Also, you won't find at our store pieces of felt in that size. Plus, felt just won't be able to grip the rug properly especially if you have a hardwood floor. Did you check around your local stores flooring department? I think I may have a less expensive solution for you. Carpet padding, not rug pad, but the kind ppl place under their carpets. It may not look pretty but its made to not be seen anyway and it works great for big area rugs your size. Home Depot sells carpet pad in pre-cut 6ft. by 9ft. rolls or have your flooring associate there cut out a size for you. Bottom line....the carpet pad will be way less expensive than the rug pads we sell, and you'll still have a slip resistant surface for your new area rug for years to come. - Depends on your budget/what you can afford now and how long you want it to last/where the carpet is located. For a bedroom carpet, you want to denser, as you are walking around bear foot. For the entrance hall, perhaps something cheaper, with a rug or runner. What you should remember is the carpet, no matter what grade, gets covered in all the germs, dirt etc you walk in, you drop etc etc. So you should really swap it every so often anyway for hygiene/allergy reasons, regardless of the quality that goes down. A quick vacuum never gets the germs out, just the dust!

- resolve works very well how big is your carpet though? you can probably do a 15x15 room with two bottles spray the whole carpet more heavily in the trouble spots let it set for 10 minutes then scrub with a stiff bristled scrubber ,you can buy them with screw in poles so you dont have to bend over,any way scrub it out real good let dry then vaccuum a few times a room the formentioned size if you have to buy the brush as well should cost under 25 dollars,if you have multiple rooms or a whole house it may be cheaper to rent a commercial carpet cleaner or have someone come do them
- Q: Our carpet is 8 years old (because we moved here 8 years ago), severely stained to such an extent that we're ashamed to look at it, has an interesting but unappealing smell, and is all over disgusting. We live in an apartment complex and have been begging for someone to do something about this carpet, however we've just decided to clean it ourselves.
