- Q: I've moved into a new apartment and have discovered that the carpet REEKS of cat urine! I've tried odour neutralizers in the carpet, as well as powders and baking soda...nothing is working!! What do I do?!
- There is a product called Nature's Miracle that is pretty good at removing cat urine smell. You can get it at Petco and Petsmart if you're in the States. Nature's Miracle is really the only thing that I've found to work but not always. You may want to try a professional carpet cleaning company too. If the smell is really bad and set in in the carpet you may be forced to remove the carpet all together. Cat urine smell can be very, very hard to get out. I would contact the landlord ASAP and ask him to fix the problem. He should either send a company to clean your carpet or put in a new carpet. You shouldn't have to live with a carpet that reeks of cat pee. If he doesn't fix it it could be reason enough to break the lease.

- Q: I was wondering how shark steam mop performed on carpets. does it remove stains and spots?
- I don't own one, but they appear to be designed for hard flooring such as tile and linoleum. There's only a cloth at the bottom where the steam passes through. I think you'd really be struggling trying to use one on carpet. A better alternative would be a carpet cleaner, Bissell and Hoover are both good brands. Expect to pay $150-300 and up. But for a budget, I love the Little Green Machine by Bissell which is much smaller. Don't try to clean an entire carpeted area with it or you'll be exhausted! But it's great for cleaning upholstery and for picking up spills on carpet, and doesn't take up a lot of storage space. Costs around $100 and you can get it at WalMart and many other retailers. Then if you need to do your whole carpet, you can rent an extractor for around $25 (check with your local supermarket, they probably rent Rug Doctor, etc.). You can get the job done in a day and not have a bulky machine taking up valuable closet space the rest of the year.
- Q: I steam clean my carpet twice a year but lately because of a sick pet it is more often. No matter if I do it myself or have a professional do it, I see dark brown water. It has never been clear. How many times do I go over the carpet to get the clean water. Is this all dirt? Or is it color from the carpet and pad. It drives me nuts. - its because of wear and tear on the carpet / the padding / and the sub flooring. the boards underneath nove when you walk on them..causing sawdust for lack of a better word. dirt and oils from your bodies and the dogs and things that have fallen on the carpet. dirty shoes. the padding deteriorating...its all normal. you will never truely get the floor clean. the only way to do that is to remove the carpet completely.

- Double sided adhesive glue on the top slab carpet thorn.It is recommended that you do not glue it. Once the carpet doesn't work, it will be troublesome to clean the glue. The better thing is to use double glue to prick the top, so that it can be reused.

- You can buy a Custom carpet or save some money by buying carpet by the yard and using your old Carpet as a stencil. Dying or painting the Carpet is only temporary and it is known to bleed and fade quickly :/ Hope that helped.

- yes if it fits and was inexpensive. don't do it if it was an expensive pile rug, oriental, or if you have contrasting colors- red and cream, black and white, etc. don't dry them in the dryer though.

- if you're worried about your kitten, try an all natural cleaner to get the dirt out. i use Simple Solutions because my puppy still has accidents on the carpet so I use that to clean it up (it removes his urine odor, cleans the carpet, and is safe if he were to sniff or lick it), there are other options at your local pet store too. as for the cat hair, try a broom or a bristle brush, it should collect all the hair into little clumps so you can just pick those up.

- Best kind of carpet, is the type that is easy to clean. My neighbor has very shaggy carpeting, and the result is more bugs, and gunk in the floor, and dirt and stains are hard to remove. Stick away from cotton, wool, polyester, etc. There are specialty carpet stores, check your local listings, also general Bed Bath and Beyond Type home improvement stores have various carpets. For cheap deals try visiting the Flee market or something. Since carpets are personal preference, it is best you feel the texture and stuff in the store for yourself.
