Q: Hi there,I have a very old house which only has 2 wires (1 white, 1 black) coming out of the wall.The ceiling fan / light has 2 red wires, 1 black, 1 green.What is right way to wire for this to operate?Thanks,: Most fans have a wiring schematic and this will tell you how to wire it. Normally black is the power, green is a ground, which you don't have, and as for the red wires I'm not sure. Is this a new fan or one that has been used before. In the USA we have a white wire which is a neutral. I'm puzzled about the two red wires, these may have been added at a later date. I was able to get the fronts wired but when I broke into the back doors there is a feedthrough connector where I need to put the wires through. Q: I'm looking to install a ceiling fan in a fixture that recently had just a light (no idea if it ever had a fan). When I removed the old light, I found that there were three white wires from the ceiling twisted together and connected to the white wire on the light fixture, one black wire from the ceiling connected to the black wire on the fixture, and three black and one white ceiling wires just capped together, not connected to the light fixture.Any idea what the last 4 wires are? I would think that I just need to leave them alone, however, I have to replace the box in the ceiling with one that is rated for a fan, which means I need to (temporarily) disconnect them. I have the breaker turned off that turned the light off, but can I be 100% sure that power to those other 4 wires if also off?: You don't have to know what they are, but other anwers are good esp with regard to safety. You can choose either to leave them alone or disconnect them and reconnect them inside your new ceiling box. If you want to disconnect them, be sure to mark all the cables first so you can't make a mistake when you reconnect them.

Q: Hi, I'm extending my pc 5.1 sound system stereo cables. I have a M/F extension wire which I will cut to solder a seamless wire to the system. Problem is that in the system cable I have a white, green(or red) and bare wire. and ont he extension I have a black red and white. Which wire do I connect to which?thanks: I'n not sure I understand the problem. In my view if you have 3 wires -- ending in, let's say, three plugs -- and want an extension it doesn't matter what colour the wires are as long as you end up connecting the original wires to the same plugs. So if you have white, green and bare on the original cable, when you cut the cable you have white, green and bare on both halves. Use the white, black, red extension cable to connect the two halves. I'd suggest white white, green red, and bare to black at one end and the same at the other ... but it doesn't really matter. Hope that helps.
