Just wouldn't want to have an extremely loud generator running disturbing the neighbors: Lots of people have stand-by generators. At only 5KW, you might consider a gasoline generator instead of diesel. The noise could be considerable, if the exhaust is in bad condition. If the muffler is in good shape, you can talk standing next to it, though you might have to raise your voice a bit. If you keep the generator in your garage with the doors closed, you probably won't bother anyone. If noise is your biggest concern, think about a smaller generator- something like 1200Watts. These are camping generators and are surprisingly quiet. That's the good part. The bad part is the lower output: you may only get to run the TV and cable box, not the fridge or microwave or toaster. With 5KW, you can run most of your house. (Need to do a survey for yourself before you get a generator. If you really need only a bit of power, getting too much is foolish; if you need more power, being underpowered is equally wrong.) Good luck!!

Q: I am trying to use a marine deep cycle battery and power inverter to power a chest freezer in an ice cream truck. The issue is that the marine battery will drain in a few hours. I was told told that I could connect the inverter to the car battery as well as the marine battery and while the engine is running, the car battery would be charge the marine battery through the inverter. Can anyone tell me how this works and how I should do the wiring?thanks: Just run heavy gage wire from one battery to the other, pos to pos neg to neg, no big deal, however your alternator ain't gonna like working that hard and will go see Allah in a very short period of time, so a high output alt will be needed sooner rather than later, and with the price of gas and seeing the shape some of those ice cream trucks are in, I see a lot of melted ice cream in your future. maybe a small generator would be more cost effective. almost forgot. if the wattage output of your inverter is not enough to power a freezer,which take quite a bit, you'll smoke the motor out of your freezer in a matter of days if not hours. yea lots of melted ice cream

The danger zone also depends a great deal on the wind and weather conditions at the time and immediately afterwards. Obviously, if the wind is blowing from your location toward the plant, then there is less likelihood that you will be contaminated.

Q: I have a Diesel generator using leroy sommers alternator and which uses intelilite MRS 11 controller , it is 380 V , 50 Hz , yesterday i started having problems , after running the genset for like 12 seconds it shuts down and i get two error msgs the first one is : Shutdown Level for Phase 1 under volts the second error msg is : Shutdown Level for Gen voltage Unbalance .in the first 12 seconds the voltage on 3 phases got no problem and after 12 seconds the generator auto shuts down and i cannot seem the find the problem , any help will be appreciated: Depends on the local rules. Power companies don't care, since once he is cut off he will not be back feeding the line. We've had a few people around here do it, including several who were far enough from the powerlines that it would have been prohibitively expense to hook them up. I just want to add that if you live in a cold climate and set yourself up to utilize the waste heat from the generator, the cost of fuel and generator may be cheaper than paying for electricity and heat together, even assuming you have to buy a replacement generator every year. If you add in appropriate alternate energy, while using the bottom line as your decision driver, you may cut your costs over conventional sources. Depends on how you do it.
