- Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) is great for absorbing odours. Sprinkle on the rug (the reverse as well as the front if necessary) leave for a couple of hours and vacuum off. You can also put a few drops of your favourite essential oil onto the rug to freshen up the smell. Also, as daft as it sounds, to get rid of chemical smells from the room itself such as glue, paint etc peel an onion, chop it in half and cover it with water, leave it in the room overnight and it will absorb the smell (don't ask me why this works but it does!) - Q: does anyone know of any antibacterial carpet powder?
- The only thing I've heard of is Borax. I sprinkle Borax on my carpet, let it set overnight, and vacuum it up in the morning. This gets rid of any odors and kills a lot of germs. I'm not sure if it's antibacterial or not but it works great for me and my carpets look like I had them installed yesterday! :) I hope this helps!

- I had a braided type of rug that I put in the washer, and it basically shredded it. I'd be careful, maybe just soak it or handwash it or something and see how it fares. If it's okay, put it in the washer on gentle.

- I usually use a strong (50:50) mix of water vinegar to use as a pre-treater. I put it in a spray bottle spray it on the spots. I make my own carpet shampoo with Zote soap. I've found it works a lot better than the store-bought shampoos. I grate a bar of Zote--or better yet, use Zote flakes if you can find them in your area-- mix a couple tablespoons in water, shake til combined fill my shampoo reservoir. I also add vinegar to the water in the machine. I have the Bissell Pro-Heat.

- You might want to try patching it. find a piece that matches you rug cut out the bad spot cut your patch go to the local hardware store flooring department get some carpet tape put the tape on the bottom of the rug, run your iron over the top the heat will melt the tape glue to your rug good as new. IF YOU CAN FIND A PATCH, other wise you can sew the rug just do it from the back with a strong thread
