- I have three dogs and three cats, three kids, too. I have carpet all through my house. I own a carpet cleaner but also have my rugs professionally cleaned twice a year. Usually in January and then August. Stanley Steamer does a great job. I have them spray pet stain and odor enzyme, too. If you can afford to buy into their plan, they are a bit cheaper. I have a 17 year old American Eskimo who isn't great about going outside. I probably use my carpet cleaner once a month or when there is an accident.Personal Experience I use Nature's Miracle on spots. There is another great product called 0 odor for smells. It really absorbs the odors without masking or covering it up. If you can vacuum daily it really helps. No matter how much you clean, it seems like stains wick up eventually. Good luck.

- Q: When my carpets are cleaned at first, they are perfectly clean and I have a friend who owns a carpet company who doesn't just steam clean the carpets. After a few months, the same stains seem to re-emerge from where they were before as if they were cleaned on the surface but re-surfaced.I have 2 cats where I have cleaned hairballs, and a lot of throwing up, and I think that's what the stains are from. I use the MIracle stuff for cat stains/odors and it seems to work at first, but again they come up especially in the hallway upstairs. The rest of my my carpets are not bad, even after a year. I take good care of them and keep them as clean as possible but these round stains in various places make it look really bad! How can I make them go away permanently. I'm tired of hiring expensive carpet cleaners where they look great for a month or so; then these same spots seem to come back plus additional hairballs which I try to catch as soon as I can.Thanks.
- what method do you actually use to clean your carpets? since the same spots are resurfacing and thats the area where your cats are then i bet you need to have the actually padding replaced there and probably the carpet as well. you dont want to ever let a pet get too comfortable in one area. they are attracted to their own smell. have that padding/carpet replaced and cleaned. and every so often rotate their area so they arent used to just one area. i know it may not be the best budget wise but with pets having carpet is the worst. tile is much better.

- Q: We bought our house 2 months ago. We didn't mind the carpet. It is very nice carpet. However, the house was built in 1955 and has origional hardwood floors under the carpet. Here is the problem... it looks like there are hardwoods, a new sub floor and the carpet. My concern is that removing the sub floor will ruin the floors under. What has your expirance been?
- After having just removed the carpeting in my house, I can tell you this: if they put a subfloor on top of hardwood, there was something wrong with the hardwood. It is not necessary in order to lay carpet. Padding and tack boards are all that are needed--which really don't ruin the hardwood. (You may want to fill a few nail holes from the tack strips.) Lots of houses have hardwood that is only finished around the edges--if you pull up the subfloor and find unfinished board flooring, that's one reason they laid the subfloor. Another reason might be that there was bad damage to the hardwood which made it uneven. A finished hardwood floor rarely needs subfloor for carpeting unless it is damaged or otherwise totally unusable as hardwood flooring. Since your house was built in 1955, it could have very badly damaged floors. There is only one way to check that--pull up the carpet in a corner, and the subfloor under that--and check. If the floors are not damaged, then the only damage will be from nail holes--which can be filled, sanded and revarnished.

- First, sop up any remaining vomit from the carpet then clean with soap and water, a commercial carpet cleaner, or even a Scrubbing Bubbles type cleaner (I use this on carpet stains all the time) or an enzymatic cleaner like Oxy Clean. Let dry and vacuum. Some of the odor should be removed now. Next, liberally apply dry baking soda to the area. You should completely cover the area with a thin layer of the baking soda. Next, use a damp sponge to rub it into the carpeting. Then sprinkle more baking soda on top. Let this sit overnight. Vacuum. The carpet should smell completely fresh. Good luck = )

- Q: I've just moved into a beautiful older home (125 years) and, although it's been recently re-wired, there just isn't always an outlet where I need it. I live with my elderly mother and do not want to take a chance that she might trip over a cord. When I do short tasks like ironing or vacuuming, can I slip the excessive cord under a rug so that she will not encounter it with her feet. She is absolutely sure that I'll burn the house down - and she's incredibly intelligent, but I'd like to hear from a real fire prevention expert.Thank you for your expertise - I think that safety is essential - paranoia is a bit much, though!
