Q: I see pictures of peoples' dorm rooms where they have heavy pictures and bulletin boards to stick on their walls and I could never find any sticky stuff at the store that was strong enough... help!: Don't you just love dorm walls? I use Command strips. After I bought my house, we have plaster walls and getting things to hang on it sometimes damages it. So I use the Comman strips on that too. Usually I use the ones that have the double sided velcro and you can buy them in variations of weight. I also use two of the 5lb hooks to hang my ironing board on the linen closet door. Every thing in my house is hung with command strips because they are sturdy, durable and don't damage the walls. Try those - they are quick and easy to put up and take down. You can get them at any discount store or home store. They are just fantastic!

Q: I think I have termites outside on my shield. I sprayed that terminix on the shield but now there are some holes that I want to cover up and since I had extra durock cement board I put it up to help keep any water or anything from going in. Is this a good idea and will the cement board be ok in the weather of the San Jose ca area.: It will be fine. A bit overkill maybe, but it will work. Might as well use it if you already have it.

Q: Or do I also use some sort of adhesive between the drywall and the cement board?: You can attach the board with screws, they make special screws for it, however those seem to tear through the webbing that adds strength to the cement board so I always use nails...use gavanized roofing nails, I normally use 1-1/2 roofing nails. Another option if it is just a kitchen wall or a back splash is using mastic and applying the tile right onto the drywall. You want to make sure if you put the tile on the sheetrock to use mastic and not thinset.

Q: I've removed the old cement boards and I've put new ones up on the shower walls. My tile will not go to the ceiling. I'm at the step where I need to apply thin-set and tape to all of the cement board seems. What do I do at the seem that transitions from cement board to sheet rock?: Yes tape those seams too. Make sure you nail the dry wall there too w/ a galvanized roofing nail. You may have to do so floating w/ thin set to get it flush but it ll work fine. The thin set , when gluing to dry wall needs to be a fresh batch or just a BIT looser and wetter since dry wall will absorb the thin set fast. Not wet wet just a bit looser. Q: I plan on tiling a bathroom in a basement. I was wondering could I just glue the backer board on the painted cinder block walls. I don't want to use screws or nails.: Use thin set to bond it to the cement walls. As a precaution I always have braces set up to hold it in place until the thin set dries. Rough the paint up well and wipe dust down and use a latex thin set to bond with. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar ..GL

Q: I'm installing a stone back splash behind my bathroom sink - 16 SF. The wall is currently painted and I want to make sure that the stone and thinset adhere properly. Should I sand the wall with 80 grit sandpaper and apply the thinset/stone or should I put 1/2 or 1/4 plywood down for better adhesion? Perhaps cement board?: Your tile man is right. The primer may fail and then your tiles will come crashing down. Which costs more, the cement backerboard or the tiles? Why did you paint it? And why did you use drywall compound on the patches? The paint is not compatible with cement, and the drywall compound is just some ground minerals and water or a little vinyl admix. If you can carefully remove the cement board, you may be able to reuse them by flipping them over. Use a stiff scraper and get the compound off the joints, and then the tip of a screwdriver to open the screw heads so you can remove them.
