- Q: I am decorating the sitting room in my new house and I am looking for some advice on sofa colours I am putting down a French oak floor, the room is fairly big so I was going to buy an extra large sofa and a large sofa, the colors available are beige, caramel, Berry red, and chocolate brown The walls are similar in colour to magnolia. And I was considering painting the chimney breast red with a paint called Tir Na Nog, its not a really bright red it is an older richer red My initial thought was to go for beige, but a friend recommended an extra large sofa in caramel and the large in berry red, she thinks the beige would be hard to keep clean with two dogs in the house.Do you think this colour scheme would work, or would I be better of sticking to one colour, and if so what colour do you think I should go for, or what colour do you think I should stay away from?
- The first thing I suggest is that you invest in an area rug that has the wall/chimney colors in it along with other colors that you like - this will also give you an actual conversation area you can add other small tables and chairs elsewhere if you have the room. I would stick with one color for both sofas and mix it up with throw pillows (check to make sure they are washable because of the dogs)... as far as colors for the sofas - I personally lean towards the chocolate brown as far as blending with the other colors in the room - although I would be concerned about the dog hair showing up so make sure you can vacuum them or wash them fairly easily and effectively... I think because of the brighter/yellow wall color the beige and caramel may clash although I cannot see a paint chip and the berry red may very well clash with your chimney color....
- Q: I need to find a way for a couple of very expensive hand-me-down sofas to stop moving on the marble floor. They have small wheels and scoot around the room when you get up. The wheels are not very easy to remove and will change the sofa height!Anyone know of a solution?
- First, if you just stop the wheels from rolling, the sofa will still move on the marble floor and scrape the floor. Here is what to do. First get some rubber casters to place under each leg, preferable ones with sides to it. This will protect the floor. Second, stop the wheel from rolling by taking some folded paper and stuffing it into the wheel at the top so it jams the wheel and it can't roll.
- Q: I have a small living room and have been trying to find suitable furniture that is not too overstuffed/big. The other issue is that the door is 30-31 inches wide and most furniture heights and depths are bigger than this. I have looked at Ikea's products and I'm considering the Karlstad loveseat or the new Sater sofa, which is a 2.5 seat leather sofa. Is Ikea furniture comfortable and durable. How good is the leather? How well does the furniture age? I don't want it looking shabby after a short while. - Q: My dogs are 8 months old and one of the licks the sofa cushions constantly. I'm not sure why but it's really gross to try to sit down with these huge wet spots (about 10-12 in diameter.) We've been planning to get a new sofa for a while now, but until we can correct this problem I don't want to invest! Bitter apple spray, tobasco, nothing helps.

- The first thing I would do is get him a cat scratcher and place it right next to the sofa. If he has already seemed to be scratching your sofa, try to pick out a scratcher that has the same type of texture. Otherwise, I would try a cardboard scratcher (they are like $5-7 from Petsmart), and it comes with catnip. You sprinkle the catnip onto the scratcher, and then it will distract him from going to your couch. However, you may need to do a little more to keep him away. What I did with my cat was purchase a small spray bottle, fill it with water, and every time she tried to play with the wires around my nightstand (that was her bad habit) I sprayed her with the water. Just a small spray once or twice. Cats HATE water, so she would run away really quickly. Now she has completely stopped, because she associates the wires with getting sprayed. But of course, water is harmless so it's a positive way of disciplining your cat. I hope this advice is useful! =)
