- We have a recliner in our daughters room... This is our first so I can't speak from experience. We prefer a recliner rather than a rocker or a glider. The recliner is SO comfortable I can't wait to use it. I plan on using it to read to her and feed her in it as well as rock her to sleep. But I guess we will see how well that works out.

- Depends on the chair. Most chairs turn out to not be so great. But a kitchen chair is good for the woman straddled on top, and any chair can be good for doggie-style for the woman to prop up on. Otherwise, chairs are overrated.

- Q: I've play flute for 8 years now, piccolo for 6. Last year when playing for chairs I got 2nd chair. I got absolutely no solos nor piccolo parts. Being my sophomore year, I didn't mind all that much. Our flute section leader was first chair. Now this year she is drum major. We played for chair with a new band director and I got 2nd chair once again, while she got 1st. I've asked to challenge but I don't know if I will be allowed to or not. When I asked last year I was gently told no. Saying all that, every time we have played for chairs I knew for a fact that I could easily beat her and become 1st chair but the band directors keep giving me 2nd. I don't know what to do. I know for a fact she's planing on once again not giving me any solos nor piccolo parts. It's really bumming me down. What should I do?
- It may not help, but just remember that because another person is rewarded doesn't mean that you're being punished. There can only be one first chair. Just because someone else has it doesn't mean you're not good, it just means you don't have first chair. Play second chair and play the hell out of it. You're not on anyone's bad side - yet. Sometimes the hard truth is that there's a half-point difference between getting the position and not. Just don't let it screw up your relationships with friends. Forty years from now the glory of having spent a few months as a high school first chair will be insignificant compared to everything else your life will hold.

- You have to look at the chair in its original context. Look at other furniture from 1929 and you won't see anything else like the Barcelona chair. Mies van der Rohe and Lily Reich were pioneers for designing this chair from heir choice of materials, minimal lines, construction (stainless steel had just been developed). When properly built to original specs, it takes a lot of high quality materials and skilled labor to produce -- around 28 hours of labor is involved. $3900 is not much for 28 hours of labor considering all the sales people, craftsmen, managers, suppliers, delivery people, laborers needed to build and move one chair. Plus all those people require work buildings, offices, insurance, cars/trucks, phones... etc. $3900 only gets you the cheaper model, there is one made of higher grade materials at $6,000. When the chair was originally designed, it did not sell for that dollar amount, the price has been adjusted for inflation, but it still was not cheap back then, it is and will always be an exclusive item. Surely, the chair can be mass-produced by machine now and sold for cheap at Target, but then it wouldn't be an exclusive item anymore. BMW and Lexus could cheapen their products for everyone to have, but then, why bother? There are Corollas and Ford Focus for the ones who don't want to/can't spend the money. By the way, it's not a simple chair at all, it's very complex, it just looks simple because in the past 7 decades, other chair designers were inspired by that iconic design. It;s iconic because it was ground-breaking, an original thought at the time. To say it is simple is to say paper is simple... yes it sort of is, but it took humans millions of years to get around to inventing it.
- Q: I live in a large apartment complex which has large private pool for residents. Most of the people in the pool are kids. There is always one lifeguard on duty. There is a 6 foot high lifeguard chair, but the lifeguards all refuse to use it even though it is in excellent condition and allows them to see all corners of the pool from high up. The lifeguards sit on a lawn chair next to the side of the pool, about 7 feet from the pool. When the pool is full of rambunctious kids, it is impossible for the lifeguard to see all the kids from that angle.Can someone give me an official definition of the purpose of an elevated lifeguard chair so that I can file a formal complaint and have this matter dealt with so the kids are safe. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.Thank you
- I have been a lifeguard for 3 years now (certified for 4, worked for 3). The whole intention of the lifeguard chair is so that the lifeguard will be able to see everything from up above the pool rather than looking at it from nearly eye level. The lifeguard should be able to see the bottom of the pool from where they're sitting so that if a kid goes under they will know about it immediately. A lifeguard is supposed to scan the pool from left to right, top to bottom, all at once. If the lifeguard is above the scene, it makes their job a million times easier and ups the safety level drastically. Hope this helps.

- Q: I am planning an outdoor ceremony, but it is on the grass. I want it to be on a hard surface so I was planning to rent tent flooring or an outdoor dance floor, to set the chairs up on. I found a company that charges per square foot, and I was just curious how many square feet should i allow per chair? also, how many feet do you think I will need to put in between the chairs for the aisle?
- Probably 2 feet wide x 3.5 deep per chair, at most, should suffice for comfort. That = 7 sqft per chair. You can set up a few kitchen chairs audience style to represent a small portion of seating. I used just 2 chairs and a tape measure. So, for instance, say 50 chairs on one side would require... 50 x 7 = 350 sqft. ... more if you want a hard outside aisle. That's to be discussed with the rental company. ... But 7 sqft per chair. Save a few bucks and squeeze it to 6 sqft. At least for the in-laws. ;-)
