Q:I noticed a bunch of sand under an area rug in our living room, and my mom said something about how fibers in old carpets an rugs turn into sand. Is this true? And if so, how does it work?: The latex that holds the primary and secondary backing has sand in it. As the latex breaks down, sand is released.

Q:I already have my carpet and padding. We purchased a whole house of like new, but used carpet at a great price for our LR and BR's and we have carpet padding. We planned to pay to have the carpet installed, but we are now completely out of money and paying someone is not an option. I know it will not be as nice or last as long, but I am wondering if we can glue the carpet down? It's just a regular mid-grade plush carpet. I am also wondering if this can be done with carpet padding or can it only be glued directly to the sub-floor? I am trying to figure out if I could staple down the carpet padding and somehow glue the carpet to the padding? Any help/suggestions on gluing down carpet with or without padding would be appreciated. Thanks!: Padding Glue

Q:My door catches on every rug i've purchased. I cannot open my front door without it dragging the rug. Anyone have any ideas where to find a very thin (yet hopefully durable) entry rug?: Try the dollar store or Big Lot's store. We have the same issue and I put two way carpet tape under the thin throw rugs. You can also use velcro tape with the glue side down, but keep it taped past the area where the door gets opened. I know how you feel and it gets annoying when your throw rugs get dragged because the door catches on it. Hope this will help you.

Hopefully for less than 50 bucks?: wal-mart is usually a pretty good bet, i've found a lot of area rugs there for $20-$25. if you're looking for brighter colors though i'd try for Target...they tend to have some really bright colors in the dorm-kinda furnishing areas.

Q:My color scheme is all earth tones, what should I do to cover said carpet?: You said the carpet is grey and beige...and your color scheme is all earth tones....with all the earth tones, this should bring out the beige tones in the carpet more than the grey, but if you want to disguise it a little more in open and high traffic areas, get a large area rug with predominantly earth tone colors and just a small bit of grey or blue. This will make the rugs blend easily with the grey tones in the carpet, but draw the eye to the rug not the carpet under it.

Q:Wet Basement Rug Mystery: My guess would be that you DO have a small leak somewhere under that rug. The rug is acting like a sponge and soaking up all of the water, some of which is evaporating. The leak is likely very small, but you should be able to pinpoint it once you take the rug up. If it were a large leak, or a constant one, the water would eventually go beyond the rug once it was saturated. Since this hasn't happened, I believe it may be a very small groundwater leak. Al
