- Q:I spilled Sunny D on my white shag carpet any ideas of how to get it out?
- If it were me, I'd take the opportunity to get rid of the shag carpet and replace it with something more practical. Otherwise ... blot the area dry as quickly and thoroughly as possible, insuring you also absorb the fluid from the padding. Once the bulk of the liquid has been removed, I'd spritz the area with water and allow it to sit for about five minutes, then repeat the blotting. Repeat until no color remains. Consider an inexpensive shampoo suitable for shag if needed.
- Q:Our house is currently covered in carpet. We have a dog who sheds and has occasional accidents in the carpet. I'm debating whether or not to switch to hardwood floors. I would like to to the floating because of cost. Does anyone have advice? Should I stick it out with carpet? Is wood that much easier?
- We had an English Bulldog that shed. Shows up good on carpet. We installed a hardwood floor by ourselves and it was easier to clean. Couple of things to consider. A large dog will have a tendancy to scratch the surface after a while of the wood floor. Especially a cheap wood floor. Things like the fake wood with plastic on top last a couple of years. Also, older heavier dogs tend to slip and have trouble standing on the slick hardwood.

- Firstly i dont know how they can justify selling them to you, they sound tight. A carpet has a five year life span,(this is a general guideline) so i would find out how long they have been in there, and they cannot charge you for this time while they have been in there as you were not occupying the property, and they cannot expect you to pay the same amount as it would for you to recarpet the whole property. say they have been in thier three years, this would mean the carpets have a two year life left. i suggest going to a carpet shop with the measurements and getting a quote and then divide that by five, and if they have been in there 3 years offer them 2/5ths of the price the carpet shop quote you. the reason i am saying do it like this is because i work in a letting/estate agents, and this is how we resolve issues with security deposits if the landlord wants to claim for carpet damages. - Q:I recently had an incident with my toddler and a light candle. The wax went all over the carpet.. bright red wax, and white carpet. I have tried using a carpet cleaner and hand scrubbing it with a brush. Any ideas how to get it out? Thanks
- Place towel over hardened wax, them press the iron over the area until wax melts and sticks to the towel. Spray a little water on the wax before ironing. But the red color is another problem entirely. Once you get the wax out tho you might be able to use a cleaner on it to get the color out.

- Unless i am doing it fallacious the kirby doesnt suck the water again up off the floor like most commercial cleaners. So i'm thinking no you must use the distinctive stuff.. Now not sure though.

- I bought an area rug at a yard sale. The people had pets. So I took the pressure washer, layed it face down first and pressured the back with carpet cleaning solution in it. Then rolled it over and did the top. I pushed the water out of it with the back side of a wide push broom. Left it out to dry in the sun and it come out like new. Mine was 5ft by 7 ft. You didn't mention the size of yours. If it is just hairy and not really dirty. Use a roll of wide tape and roll it around your hand (many times) and pick up the hair. I am guessing that you have pets, the are definetly hard on black.

- Q:I have a large oriental rug that needs fringe. On one end, the fringe has been cut off completely. The other end has a few inches of the mesh rug backing at the end. Is there a way to add fringe and make it look fairly original to the rug?
- Sure you can. The most authentic method would be to use a 2-ply wool yarn and a darning needle. Pull them through in the right place, carefully putting 2 loops in each hole of the mesh. Use a piece of cardboard about 4 inches high and the width of your rug to keep your loops even. When you get to the end, go back over the spots where your loops come through the rug and use a backstitch to catch the thread of the first with a thread of the second...anchor it...do the same thing to do the thread of the second (which is part of your first tie) to the thread of the third. Keep going until they're all anchored. Then if you want cut fringe, go back over your threads and tie them a second time about 1/2 lower than where they're sewn down. Once your little pairs are tied, snip the bottoms open. The other option won't look as authentic, but it works. You can buy lengths of fringe in the trim section of a good fabric store. Buy a length that's about 5 longer than you need for each end (so you have enough to turn under at each end). Stitch it down by hand as no machine will sew well through a rug. Use a little Fray Stay or superglue on the ends to keep them from unraveling.
- Q:You know how bathroom rugs frequently have rubber backing on them? I was to know if there is a way to reapply the rubber backing which has fallen off and cracked due to age. The top of the rug is fine.
- I have done this before and I can honestly tell you that the rubber will crack and leave bit and pieces in the washer a real mess to clean up , so now I wash them in the laundry tub and hang them outside to dry , I also try to purchase new rugs without the rubber backing ,if you need to prevent them from slipping away just buy some backing that is sold by the roll .
