- Q: I get conflicting opinions from mechanics about extended shut-down.I am parked for 3 months and driving is not an option. Should I re-start my diesel engine weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or just wait the 3 months and re-start then? If so, should I just restart as normal?I do know when I re-start, I must wait until normal temperture is reached prior to shut down, this could take 20 minutes or longer with the rear mounted engine. The radiator covered from the outside will not warm-up as fast as a front mounted engine. Covering this radiator from the inside is not an option due to a shroud covering the fan.
- if you are going to leave it sitting they can sit for more than a year and it will still run fine but the only question is the battery they can not stay fully charged so if not using then disconnect the positive side to the battery and when you want to use it just reconnect it this is the way i do to preserve the battery and for added protection add stabil (fuel stabilizer) to diesel if it is going to sit through the winter Edit : a battery charger is a good idea My parent's RV has a solar panel which keeps the battery fully charged but does not use the RV much 1 to 2 times a year had a stabil in it so far no problems but the generator is problematic cause it runs on gas so I had to start it every month to make sure there is no problems with it(run it for 1/2 hour) gas deteriorates faster than diesel even if it has stabil
- Q: engine is on a generator with about 800 hrs. changed fuel and fuel is getting to cylinder, pulled valve cover and valves are moving like they should, sprayed either in air intake and still no pop. any ideas other than to scrap the engine
- take it to a mechanic? how do you know there is fuel getting to the right spot? glow plugs?
- Q: I live in california, in the ventura count so anywhere close to there.

- Q: I need the information to do a science project - how is this electrical energy stored?
- It's funny you should ask because I was just researching the wind energy subject while looking at getting a job with a company that makes generators. Generally I've found that it isn't! Wind power is usually expected to be supplimental to the power grid because you can't depend on it 24/7. The only exceptions to this are remote areas where they have no power grid access and even then they usually have diesel generators too. I have seen small ones on sailing boats where I'm sure it just tops up their batteries. Waste byproducts are zero or even negative. I say negative because in a lot of places the excess power is fed back into the power grid reducing the need for the other power stations to pollute as much. In fact the only bad things I've heard are from those that think they are an eye sore, those that think they are noisy (which generally are not) and those that think birds will crash into them. it's funny that they don't complain about the glowing ones that nest at my local nuke generating plant tho ;o)
- Q: If a 13L big diesel engine can produce 400 hp at 1800 rpm, and a 7L diesel can produce 400 hp at 3600 rpm, but the 13L produces twice the torque, which would produce more electricity?
- The 13L would produce more electricity.The smaller generator has to work almost twice as hard to do the same job. Torque is a measure of the turning force on an object such as a bolt or a flywheel. For example, pushing or pulling the handle of a wrench connected to a nut or bolt produces a torque (turning force) that loosens or tightens the nut or bolt. Also the higher the RPM the hard the generator has to work to get to 400hp so your 13L at 3600 RPM would produce around 750 Hp
- Q: How to shut off the diesel generator

- Q: A concert is in the works to raise money to help save the Everglades in Florida. I am looking to get as many people interested in the cause as possible. So what would make you want to go to this concert? Bands, the host, food, activities, location, day/night, etc.
- 1. Do your research on how you or your partners are going to fund an event of this magnitude. Although the Government does not give out much grant money, they are more apt to give grants to non-profit organizations or fund events such as yours where it may be something to help the community. 2. This has been a fight that has been going on for many years and now people are just starting to listen. I would say catch their attention while it's there. Market the event by telling people what the event is about beforehand and don't spring it on them by having a tree hugger come out to give a speech before or during the bands performance, Buzz Kill! You got them there, don't lose them! 3. Every great event had a great name and a catchy slogan, consult with some professionals. Try something like this! Earth for the Everglades Music Concert 08 4. Try to have musicians from all different genres to participate this way it will show the unified effort to send the message. FYI When you start looking for your musicians, try to speak to them directly and not their managers. Most managers are looking for the bottom dollar and looking out for themselves, not having the artist' best interest in mind. Most artist' are eco-conscious people so who knows? You might have their participation for a small fee this way you could spend more of that budget on other costs, marketing, ads, campaigning etc. Exploit that! Food: It's a concert so don't budget too much into having an elaborate menu, maybe sliders(turkey burgers, hamburgers), hot dogs etc. and lots of beer! Activities: Have eco-vendors at this event and you could charge them a fee for space. Games, horseshoe throwing, darts, etc. Location: Sorry don't know much about FA or the LA everglades. But I was thinking Orlando as they could accomodate an event such as yours. Time: All activities during the day and music starts at sunset. Although hot women in bikinis would be great but it does'nt speak for the cause. Good luck!
- Q: Do you have more insights into this? Japan builds great cars, machinery, tools and high-tech products. Their bullet train is known for almost zero delays in decades. Yet with the Fukushima nuclear power station we have flawed tsunami protection in a location known for powerful earthquakes and tsunamis for at least centuries. I guess no one should be surprised by a ca. 50 feet tsunami at that location. It looks to me like such an obvious blunder. Am I mistaken? - And I mean no offense to the great people of Japan who so valiantly dealt with the terrible tsunami crisis that I admire this very much. Thank you.
- Yes you are mistaken. The Fukushima station was designed to withstand average tsunami that had occurred in that area. However the tusnami that hit was much larger than any seen before in that area, or in recorded human history for that matter. Even if you could design a facility to withstand a 200 or even 500 year disaster, eventually you'll encounter something even larger, and then you'll be right back here whining about why did they only design the structure for a 500 year disaster, blah blah blah. Furthermore, such a facility would be prohibitively expensive and over engineered. Was it a risk to only design something to withstand a once-in-a-century event? Sure, but there's no such thing as 0% risk.
- Q: I have a generator in the building I am working on. It appears quite dated, but its stats are as follows: it’s a 415 Volt 3 Phase Diesel Generator.On the plate of the generator:415V3 Phase640KVA520KWPower Factor 0.8902 AmpsSo my question is:We are testing the generator to its full load, now my load is at power factor 1. Would I be correct in assuming that because my load is power factor 1 that the full load of my generator is 640kW not 520kW.Or is it that my actual power loading is rated at 520kW, but that load is allowed to be inductive or capacitive to 0.8.Because it says 900 amps on the plate I am therefore under the assumption that regardless of my load characteristics, as long as I do not exceed 900 amps there should be no problem. Or is it a case that my load can only be 520kW and the highest I can allow the phase to go out is up to 640kVA.Hope that makes sense, ill edit if not. Thanks for reading.
- While your generator will handle the amperes as either KVA or KW, unfortunately, the KW rating is is the rating of your driver. You are driver limited, not generator limited.

- Best wishes for a good outcome regarding your storm. I was lucky with outcome of Sandy. Power out for two hours only and no damage to Pennsylvania home. Still waiting on information regarding my family's shore home in New Jersey. Lucky that father left the island ahead of storm. No word yet, on condition of home on the water. No one can go back onto the island yet. We expect that our docks are gone and the garage is flooded based on pictures posted. Thankfully, the boat was already dry docked a few weeks ago. It should be okay. New Jersey apparently took the biggest hit from the storm.
