- I have Stainmaster ... and I have 3 dogs and a cat. My carpet is not yet 4 years old, and it is destroyed. Stainmaster isn't worth the time it takes to type the word. OK, the truth is ... if a stain is just on the surface, and you catch it and clean it RIGHT AWAY ... yes, you can usually get it out. However, if it soaks through, forget it. You may be able to get most of the visible stain out, but the smell? No way. If you could replace your carpet with Pergo, tile, anything BUT carpet, I'd recommend it. If, however, you do want to use carpet, I'd look into commercial-grade carpet. That's the stuff used in department stores, restaurants, offices, etc. Not too luxurious, but pretty tough. It is a very tight carpet ... most wet stains and spills will wipe up. And it can be vigorously scrubbed without damaging it. If you buy a carpet with an allover pattern, in a medium-to-dark tone, it will better hide the stains than one that is a solid color, especially a light color.

- Not a carpet cleaner, but an enzyme neutralizer. Nature's Miracle or Simple Solution from the pet store. Squirt it on and just let it dry. Will not clean the carpet. It will eliminate the stain and any odor.
- Q:The carpet will go in a finished basement. The basement has bare concrete right now.
- If your basement is at most, a little damp, then I'd hesitate before putting in carpeting. You don't want mold to form under the carpet. Try to dry the basement out first. Maybe all you need is a good dehumidifier that you will continue to run. If you're not sure about the floor, do a simple test. Tape a 3x3 foot plastic sheet onto the floor. Seal all edges. Come back in a few days. If there is moisture between the floor and plastic, don't finish the basement floor with carpet. Once the basement is dry, just put an 8-pound pad under the carpet. You don't need roofing felt under it. If you are gluing carpet or carpet squares directly to the floor, be sure to seal any and all cracks in the cement first. Also, use a water-soluble glue in the event that you have to rip up the carpet due to a flooded basement. Don't cover the drains with carpet or, at least, mark them off so you can find them later. There is a spray mold-retardant that can be applied to the carpet after it is laid down. We had that done in our basement. I'm not sure if that can be done prior to laying the carpet, i.e., to spray the floor and/or the padding first.

- I suggest...brushing it/raking it. Sounds weird but back in the 70's when shag rug was in, raking was introduced to the carpets. If you rake it, it combs the direction of the carpet, but also pulls materials in from deep within the carpet. If this doesn't work...try a lint brush with teeth. Not a roller that picks up sticky stuff.

- Roger, there too many things involved in installing carpet right there is not time to tell you all you need to know. If you don't do it properly. it has to be constantly adjusted and redone. For this job you need expert help.
- Q:What causes carpet around the edges to turn grey in a stairwell?
- The technical term, as used by the carpet cleaning industry, is Filter Dirt. This term refers to soil/dust that has passed through the furnace duct work, and the furnace air filter, and has now attached it self to the carpet fibers. When this dust is circulating through the house, from the cold air return to the heat/air ducts, it picks up an electric charge which makes it difficult to remove from the carpet fibers. When it shows up on the edge of each step, it is thought that the dirt/soil is coming up from the under side of the steps, through the small crack in the wood base holding up the steps. Some people plagued with this problem, have replaced the carpet ,and prior to this, caulked the seams between the steps and the wall. You need to look at getting your air ducts professionally cleaned. They should be cleaned every 5 years, anyway. also, you may need to consider replacing your furnace air filter with a paper pleated style. Do not purchase the 3 for a dollar fiberglass style. The cheap filters have the ability to only trap golf balls and pop cans. They allow most soil and dirt to pass right on through the system. Change your furnace air filter every 4 months religiously. Use a black marker to write on the duct work near the furnace of your change out dates. This gives you a written filter change out record in an appropriate location. The carpet cleaning industry does have a solvent based product to help clean the filtration soil from the carpet. One is called Filter Out. from Pro's Choice. Sometimes the stains are permanent, as the soil while traveling between the air ducts is picking up cooking oils from the kitchen, making for a difficult oil/dust, electrically charged stain to remove. These stains are also found around furniture setting right on the floor, and under doors that remain closed. Hope I've given you some guidance to help deal with future filtration soil problems in your home. (3M makes the best paper pleated air funace filters)

- For the heavily soiled areas, use a rug stain remover, like Spot Shot or Resolve carpet cleaner. For the rest of the rug, use a cloth dampened with a white vinegar and water mix. It will clean and deodorize the rug. Turn a fan on, directed at the rug to help speed the dry time.
- Q:I've never heard of carpet tile. How do you install them and what are the advantages/disadvantages compared to a roll of carpet?Are the tiles cheaper? Easier?
- Some hotels and even my Grandpa's nursing home are installing carpet tiles because of the ease of repairs - make a spot just lift up and replace the tile (not the whole carpet). But, in my Grandpa's nursing home the carpet tiles are fraying at the edges and it is pretty noticeable that the carpet is just carpet tiles because you can see each edge is....fluffy. Is that a good description? The fringe looks tacky. I think regular carpet would last longer. Especially if it's a high traffic area - or if it will ever get cleaned with a carpet cleaner - carpet cleaners really tear up the tiles. Seems like a huge waste of money to me.
