Q: For Christmas this year I want to do really personal gifts because they are the most fun and I think people enjoy them the most. So I was thinking for one of my friends I would go get a chair from good will and paint it and make it look like hello kitty because she loooves hello kitty. I want the back of the chair to be the face of hello kitty. Any ideas of how I could make it looks like that. I want it to actually take the shape of it not just be painted on it.: If you can find a chair that has a solid back instead of rails, you could go to your local lumber yard and ask them to cut you a shape that will cover the top back of the chair, and glue it on. Or you could find a chair with a round seat and just paint the seat instead. Or if you get discouraged, just paint the chair the exact color of Hello Kitty stuff, and she can use it as a co-ordinating piece to go with what she already has. . .

Q: I brought this rather expensive office chair 1 year ago. Yesterday I sat down to hard on one side of the chair and know its like a buckeroo cowboy! It feels as if the chair is sitting on the pole and its leaning drastically whatever I slightly put weight on, so if I sit slightly forward it just about tips me off, if i lean slightly to the right it nearly tips me off to the right. What can I do, what part do you think has gone?: I doubt the chair is ruined, it just needs some routine maintenance. Most such chairs have 4 screws which hold the bottom of the chair seat to a metal bracket on the top of the pneumatic height adjusting column [the pole you mention]. It is common for these screws to work loose, and often some actually fall out on the floor. I SUSPECT that this is what has happened in your case. It sounds like you have at least two [maybe 3 - left front and rear, and right rear] screws totally gone [on the side OPPOSITE to the direction to which it's ,,,tilting drastically... Turn the chair upside-down, and examine the four slotted screw openings in the metal bracket on top of the vertical support column. Tighten any loose screws, and get down on your hands and knees to try to find any missing screws. IF there are any missing screws, remove one of the remaining screws and take it to a local, neighborhood HARDWARE STORE, and get IDENTICAL replacements for the missing screws [and I always get 2 or 3 extras to keep in my desk drawer for when another screw is lost - it WILL happen]. Use IDENTICALLY THREADED [AND LENGTH] screws, and periodically recheck and re-tighten all screws.

Q: What are the possible ways I could use to finish my chair.. oil, varnish, ...? and what are the advantages of each of them, are they cheap, etc?: I would not use oil since it could ruin someones clothes. Varnish or Poly is best. Shellac turns yellow with time. All cost about the same.

Q: I'm wondering if it takes a relatively strong person to break a mid-quality chair over someone's head. Could the average person do it?: I can't help but want to test and see if it would break or not. Personally, I don't think it could be done by most people unless they were insanely angry at their target of furniturey smackdown. And even then, the chair would probably win against someone's head.

As for chairs, Office Masters are standard and have great lumbar support and are fully ergonomically adjustable. Wherever you work, see if they have an Ergonomics Program (call your H.R. dept) and if they do, request an immediate Ergonomic Evaluation.
