- Q: I'm going to buy one next week for my son and I want something nice... preferably compact, but not necessarily. I also don't want one of those you sit in a chair and strap on to it. I want a completely seperate high chair for him! Thanks!
- I have the Chicco Polly because it was highly recommended in the Baby Bargains book. I have not used it yet, but I can tell you that it looks very easy to clean (it even comes with two removable tray covers) and it folds up very compact. The Baby Bargains book also recommended the Fisher Price Rainforest chair -- actually, it got a higher rating than the Polly -- but the decoration is just too much for me.
- Q: Wondering if anyone has any good stories about a chair breaking while they were sitting in it? What kind, what was it made out of? I just recently broke a wooden kitchen chair! I was leaning on the back legs and they broke loose and I crashed into a table behind me and broke a lamp and picture frame! Guess that's why my mom always told me not to lean back on the legs...
- I was in one of those little kid plastic ones, it was pink, old, and from Ikea. I was babysitting my niece and we were having a little tea party. I tried to scoot in by jumping with the chair, like that little hop to scoot in. So, the front legs to the chair broke and my head smacked onto the little table, causing me to get a bloody nose, and the little tea pot filled with tea went all over my lap. My niece still likes to bring it up every time i see her saying that i peed cause I was scared but I always tell her it was the tea. I had a bruise for a while and i'm still ashamed of the incident.
- Q: Okay, so I need to find a high chair that I can buy two of that won't take up much room (my dining space is small). They don't need to be foldable because we are doing foster care and we'll have a couple babies. So they will be used very often. I need them to be tough and hold up. I can't have a pad that has to go in the washer. I need to just be able to wipe it. I want a good one. Not the $30 one from walmart....(that one takes up a lot of space! and the pad seems as if it may rip at the seem over time.) I like the Combi Breeze one.....But haven't seen it in person........what do you think??

- Q: I found a very cool shaped very old chair at a junk shop for $5. It is in fairly good shape and sturdy (none of the arms or legs wiggle). But it is missing the seat, which I would imagine was one time a woven cane seat that has fell out. I would prefer not to re-cane a new seat (I have done this before, but I don't find it comfortable to sit on this type of seat and they don't wear well). I would much rather put in a padded upholstered seat, but am not sure how? There is just a large hole in the middle where the seat used to be, and I'm having trouble thinking of ways to attach a piece of wood with padding and upholstery. It doesn't have to be super sturdy, as it won't have more than a 170lb person in it, and will more than likely not be used daily (it will be for our bedroom). - The most throrough way is to dissassemble the chair and reglue it. Label each part with some masking tape and number it so each piece goes back exactly where it came from. The only thing more frustrating than trying to find the right piece as the glue is setting up is to discover you have a piece in upside down the next day. If there are nails or screws in the joints or corner blocks remove them first. Then generally the chairs will fall apart with a little tapping. Clean the inside and outside of each joint with a little sandpaper -- lightly, so you don't create a gap. Then get some white glue like Elmer's or Titebond and reassemble the chair. Make sure it sits level, all the joints are tight and leave it alone for 24 hours.

- Q: If I have a CIS cyclohexane (with 2 cis substituents), would that translate into a CIS chair conformation (with both substituents pointing in the same direction)?? Or are they completely unrelated?Because when I try converting cyclohexanes to chairs, I end up getting the trans conformation...The lowest energy conformation of cis-1-4-(1,1-dimethylethyl)cyclohexane is not a chair. Why?^^For the above question, the answer is because ONE of the t-butyl groups is in an axial position...BUT when I draw the cis cyclohexane and convert it to a chair, I get BOTH t-butyl groups in opposite-direction axial positions...which, I know, isn't the cis conformation.Is it not possible to convert from cyclohexanes to chairs? Like, having a cis cyclohexane DOES NOT translate into a cis chair conformation??
- For your first question, you are likely drawing your chair conformer correctly, but interpreting it incorrectly. Are you equating equatorial and axial positions as trans? Cis substituents are sometimes in equatorial and axial positions - you can tell that they are cis if BOTH are the upper or lower subsituent. The substituents are trans if one is in the upper position, and one is in the lower position. I wish I could attach a picture to this answer to show you better. For your second question, you are probably drawing it incorrectly. One will be axial, and one will be equatorial. Remember to number your carbons so that you are drawing your substituent on the right one. tert-butyl groups are very bulky and will add a lot of steric hindrance to your molecule. In this case, a boat conformer will actually be more stable! Cis cyclohexanes do translate into chair conformations, but this particular molecule is more stable as a boat.
- Q: How much bigger than chairs and how to make a pattern?
- Unscrew the chair bottom and turn upside down on top of your fabric. Lift edge of fabric over chair edge and see how much it takes to be able to staple to the bottom. Cut fabric around chair bottom that much. staple middle of front....pull fabric tight and staple middle of back. Do the same thing on the sides and continue stapleing and pulling fabric. Do the same thing for the seat back.
- Q: I just broke my 4th chair this year. Don't bother telling me to diet, I tried and cant. I need gastric bypass but cant afford it. I even bought a 2oo dollar chair and after about a month or 2 it broke. What brands would best suit me, for a computer chair and how much weight do average chairs for the computer hold? Serious answers only, no need to be mean.
