- When you rent the carpet cleaner, there will be cleaning solutions there that you can buy. Use the Oxyclean to pretreat, but do not put it or the Borax in the carpet cleaner machine. They will ruin the machine and then you will have to pay for it or for repairs. Use only the cleaning solutions that are recommended. Ask the person who is renting the machine to you. They know what cleaner to use for what stains. If you have not cleaned your carpet for over 3 years, you may have to do some heavy traffic areas 2 or 3 times to get all the dirt out.
