- As for what brand of cleaning solution works the best, IMHO, Rug Doctor cleaners are the best and most economical, particularly when you use Oxy Clean as a pretreatment solution and a fortifier for the cleaning product.

- Prop it up off the floor with wadded newspaper where you can. Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet and let it sit overnight then vacuum it up. In the morning put some vanilla extract in a empty spray bottle with warm water and spray the carpet lightly. Between the vanilla and the baking soda treatments the smell will be neutralized. Open windows if you can..The formaldehyde smell lasts a good week.

- That's how my wife cleans ours- we have a 5 by 9 rug in our living room. Our new puppy still has a problem, and that's his favorite place to make a mess! We take our outside and drag it up over the kids swing set. If it's really bad we lay it on the grass first and she scrub brush with some white vinegar to hit the spots, then hose the daylights out of it. We'll leave it outside for a day or two, airing it out helps. You might want to try some sort of different cleaner too- if you know anyone that works in a school, hospital or nursing home. They have some enzyme type cleaners to treat carpet with, if you have a janitor's supply close you can see what they recommend. The grocery store stuff didn't do much for us either! Good Luck!

- Q:I just moved into a new apartment about three weeks ago, and the carpet in only one room smells like ammonia. It's a really terrible smell and it won't go away after vacuuming many times. I know they shampooed the carpets before I move in. The lady before me who lived here had a dog. I know urine can smell like ammonia after it's sat awhile. Could it be that her dog peed on the carpet? Any ideas about how to get rid of the smell without shampooing the carpet?
- That is urine. You need to call a professional. First they need to find the areas affected with a black light. Then they need to treat each area with 1-2 quarts of enzymatic cleaner. Suck it out with a truckmount carpet cleaner and an attachment called a water claw sub surface extractor. You see, most of the urine is in the pad, some is in the carpet, some may be in the sub floor. There is no way to effectively deal with this yourself. How do I know? I am a pro carpet cleaner with easily 10,000 pet urine stains worth of experience, I know, people call me after they give up. After the carpet is extracted, I will rinse it with 2-4 quarts of water per stain, basically twice as much as the cleaner. Again I extract with the water claw. I get 99% of the moisture I put in back out. If I used a Rug Dr, I'd leave about 98% in. With a shop vac, maybe only leave 90% of what I put in. I much prefer to leave 1% in. Then I will clean your carpet and use a low pH rinse agent. You see, urine smells like ammonia, because the nitrates in urine eventually become ammonia. Ammonia has a pH around 12.0, which is very high. You want you carpet to be close to a neutral pH after you clean it, around 7.0. 12 being 5 points over 7 means I will rinse with something with a pH of 2, neutralizing the carpet back to 7 and the ammonia is gone. Use a certified pro that knows what they are doing. Your landlord is obligated to pay, he rented you an apartment that was represented as clean and it obviously isn't. You could take him to court over this. It is called breech of contract basically you are not receiving what you are paying for.
- Q:I've never heard of carpet tile. How do you install them and what are the advantages/disadvantages compared to a roll of carpet?Are the tiles cheaper? Easier?
- Some hotels and even my Grandpa's nursing home are installing carpet tiles because of the ease of repairs - make a spot just lift up and replace the tile (not the whole carpet). But, in my Grandpa's nursing home the carpet tiles are fraying at the edges and it is pretty noticeable that the carpet is just carpet tiles because you can see each edge is....fluffy. Is that a good description? The fringe looks tacky. I think regular carpet would last longer. Especially if it's a high traffic area - or if it will ever get cleaned with a carpet cleaner - carpet cleaners really tear up the tiles. Seems like a huge waste of money to me.

- Dye is pretty permanent if the professional couldn't get it out either replace the carpet or put a scatter rug over the spot. I got a carpet I think its mohawk made that is from recycled plastic milk cartons, its a tad rougher than normal fiber but soft enough to sit on(not harsh like berber carpet), it can't be dyed anything that spills on it beads up even red koolaid just blots away, and pet stains.. it would be something to invest in..
