- Q: I'm replacing the door speakers in a 2001 Coupe Camaro with the factory sound system. I needed to know which wire was positive and which was negative so I bought a circuit tester. However, I keep getting the reading that both wires are positive. What could be causing this? I know the circuit tester works because I tested it on the battery terminals and it worked fine.
- Speaker wire carries AC current. A circuit tester designed for DC voltage won't work, at least for telling you which is positive or negative. (It doesn't matter whether you use chassis ground, or the other speaker wire, as a reference). In the driver's door, the positive wire should be tan and the negative wire gray. In the passenger door, the positive wire is light green and the negative wire is dark green.
- Q: what size of wire should I use for my 1.5hp aircon, 220volt
- If the distance to the power source is 100 ft or less a #10 wire should work. If it is further than that you should call an electrician. added note: # 14 copper is for light service wire. It would max out under use with an AC and possibly overheat.
- Q: I hooked up my Klipsch floor speakers with the old-cheapy wire and then bought, I think it was monster cable, and bi wired it. Big sound improvement. But I've heard pros and cons on monster cable. I have three zones to wire in my house. If I bi wire the other two zones what's the best wire to get? You can spend a small fortune on wire. If I bi wire, zone 2 would be 30 feet x 4 and zone 3 50 feet x 4. I read that if one of the wires is silver it's better as silver's the best conductor. This I knew already. But, when I bought the wire that I did, it didn't state anywhere on the label that it contained silver and I think that would be a drawing point. In fact, I didn't see any wire at that store that said it was part silver and it wasn't Walmart but a major electronics store. I did see some that had silver colored strains but so is steel and aluminum. I also read on another forum that CAT 5 wire works well for bi wiring? Thoughts? Opinion?
- Silver is used in a number of video cables including those made by Monster Cable, but the cost increases greatly with these higher quality cables. To cite and example, a 4ft piece of Monster Cable with silver coated copper conductors runs $150.
- Q: I made a kill switch for my car. All I need to do now is cut the wire that goes into my engine control module and join it with the switch I made. Would it be fine if I just use wire nuts or some sort of tape to join the wires instead of soldering? The instructions say quot;Step 6: Attach the killswitch wires one to each side of the wire you just cut. Step 7: Tape up all new connection.quot; It says to tape the new connections, but should I use exactly?
- Sure thing. Wire nuts work fine. I've used them a bunch on my project cars. However, if you want a connection that won't be affected by water (rain and/or humidity) and a connection that is permanent (won't come loose) use automotive crimp type connectors covered with heat shrink tubing or liquid electrical tape.
- Q: my dogs have chewed my central air contactor wire.my ac will not cut on. does anyone knows how to replace them and where to buy replacement wires locally( i live in Dallas TX.) i would like to do it myself instead of spending a lot of money.
- This should be copper wire and a splice could be made with little risk since the thermostat is a low voltage circuit in most cases. Try the local HVAC contractor for some of the type you need. There are different types ( number of conductors) for different controllers so they need to match. If you just have the HVAC contractor do a fall service on the system they can make the needed repairs and prepare the whole system for the winter. It was probably used a lot this last summer so a service is about due.
- Q: I just bought an exhaust tip with leds which needs to be wired up to the brake lights on my mazda 626. Can somebody tell me which colour wire it is (positive) on the wiring to the brake light? There are a few wires and I dont know which one it is! Thanx
- Its either red or green, sometimes white if there is a black ground wire.
- Q: is there a way to wire an exit sign to a plug for an outlet receptacle?
- First off, Aurthur A's answer is composed of several NEC violations; he may be going to electrical hell, if he doesn't shape up. Second, you did not say if this is a required exit sign. If it is, then you will need a licensed electrical contractor to install it; as most jurisdictions will not allow work in anything but the owner's principle dwelling to be done by unlicensed personel.
- Q: What's the best kind of wire to use that can stand being kilned?
- that really depends what you want to do and how high you are going to fire. Generally nichrome 80/20 wire should be OK until cone 9. Then there is Kanthal which will withstand even higher temperatures but is more expensive than nichrome. You could get either probably in electronics supply houses. If you do lowfire, maybe up to cone 06 or lower steel will probably be OK. The surface of the steel will oxidise and so get clearly thinner, keep that in mind. Generally your wire and the clay should not be in direct contact because they have different thermal expansion coefficients. Depends how rigid your wire is if it will lead to major damage to your piece. But if you wrap your wire with paper before you put clay around it it is probably OK as long as you don't enclose the entire thing with clay into a hollow space. But it also depends on what exactly you are trying to do, e.g. what kind of clay you are using. Mostly people use wire with clay for making beads. If that's what you are doing you can also look up bead making techniques.
- Q: What are the types of Barbed wires?
- Barbed wire is a sharp, twisted form of wire which is used mainly for protection and containment. Barbed wire is twisted at various stages to create sharp points which can create an instant injury if scaled. There are several different types of barbed wire. Classic Classic barbed wire is also the cheapest available. It is made of either steel or aluminum. The wire is twisted at sequential stages to create sharp points. Classic barbed wire will be used to keep animals in a specific area or to keep people away from a protected area. Razor Wire Razor barbed wire is used to line the walls of prisons and containment facilities. This wire is made by cutting large strips of aluminum with a sharp triangular blade on each side of the wire strip. These blades are extremely sharp. They are intended to cause much greater injury than a piece of classic barbed wire. Razor wire is often used to protect business premises from intruders. Spiral Spiral barbed wire is formed with a sharp blade running parallel to a piece of normal steel. This is then twisted into a spiral shape to create a long and continuous sharp edge to the wire. Spiral wire is often used for army exercises and for other containment or protection purposes. I hope this quite help u... thank u. :-)
- Q: We are replacing an older style submersible 3 wire well pump with a newer style 3 wire plus ground. I do not know where to ground the green wire? Is it necessary to extend the wire from the pump all the way to the top and ground it there or can i just ground it to the pump itself? Any ideas? First time home owner... trying to save money and not call an electrician (Im an avionics technician so I have some what of an idea what im doing.) Thanks
- It shouldn't be grounded to back to the pump, it should be brought out and grounded either with the house or a separate grounding rod.
