Them you will need a book on your make model and year as GM codes are different for year and models made before 1996. After 1996 all codes and ALDL connectors are the same for each make and model. Getting the code still means you have to run the flow chart and do the repair. Just because you get a code you don't just replace the part. You need to confirm it is defective and not just working wrong because of some other component.

My Pontiac does that from time to time giving an oxygen sensor fault- so I go to Advance and turn it off. Since they have added more ethanol to gasoline that causes oxygen sensors to go out more frequently- at least that is what I have heard. I'm sure if your friend doesn't know how the use the code scanner one of the store workers will gladly show him how to use it.
