- lay the rug out upside down and place some weight on the problem ares....boxes of books, or canned goods for example...it don't have to be too heavy. let it go for a few days and then turn the rug over and do the same with any problem areas

- Hi Claire, In choosing a Rug which lasts approx 10 years or more I would suggest that in this case you choose a neutral color. I realize many may think that Tan, Taupe or Light Gray. are a safe choice and so basic. But with that said Carpeting can expensive. Changing the Wall Paint is far more cost effective. In the future, you may decide to use another wall color paint in the room. Tan, Taupe or Light Grey would be my thoughts for you ! * All of the above mentioned colors come in a variety of many shades. I also suggest taking a Paint chip with you to the store for comparisons if you are concerned. Tan/Taupe will provide an earthy color to the room, while Gray colors are visually cool color. - The best way to clean an oriental rug is either to wash it yourself with bicarbionate of soda and vinegar, or farm it out to be washed by a company that specializes in oriental rugs. NEVER use detergent or a chemical cleaner, or dry clean, an oriental rug. All these substances will destroy the protective lanolin in the rug. A 6x8 would be really easy to do yourself. First, vacuum it face-down to loosen the deepest dirt, then right side up. You can either lay the rug on flat, clean concrete (not tarmac), or hang it over a couple of ladders or a fence. Then, rub bicarb all over it, then saturate with vinegar; it will foam up and push out the dirt. Rinse well. The advantage of doing it on a flat surface is you can squeegee it, then hang it. If over ladders, it may take a few days to dry.

- Go to a corner and simply pull up the carpet. It is probably attached by a tack strip.....a strip of wood with slanting nails to hold the carpet. Remove all of the carpeting and then all of the padding underneath. A dust mask is a good idea while doing this. If you intend to send the carpet out with the trash, cut strips no larger than 4 feet and roll the strips up into tight tubes and tie with string. Last, remove the tack strip. The tack strip has been nailed down. A small nail every 6 inches or so. Remove the strip carefully. If you need to pry, use a piece of the padding or carpet under your pry bar so as not to dent the flooring. You will have some nail holes in the flooring from the tack strip, but this is close to the wall and so it won't be too noticeable. Know that you probably have water damage on the flooring from your leak and you may need to have the floors refinished. Good luck!
