Then treat the stains by rubbing the bicarb into the pile of the carpet and pouring a little white vinegar over the area. Allow to dry, then vacuum. You may have to repeat this process, but it does work. It is inexpensive and does not damage the carpet. I use this method on carpets (urine stains from an old cat) tapestry sofa and chairs and dining chairs which are antiques and it works every time.
