Q: What causes carpet around the edges to turn grey in a stairwell?: The technical term, as used by the carpet cleaning industry, is Filter Dirt. This term refers to soil/dust that has passed through the furnace duct work, and the furnace air filter, and has now attached it self to the carpet fibers. When this dust is circulating through the house, from the cold air return to the heat/air ducts, it picks up an electric charge which makes it difficult to remove from the carpet fibers. Use a black marker to write on the duct work near the furnace of your change out dates. This gives you a written filter change out record in an appropriate location. The carpet cleaning industry does have a solvent based product to help clean the filtration soil from the carpet. One is called Filter Out. from Pro's Choice. Sometimes the stains are permanent, as the soil while traveling between the air ducts is picking up cooking oils from the kitchen, making for a difficult oil/dust, electrically charged stain to remove. These stains are also found around furniture setting right on the floor, and under doors that remain closed. After all, you were trying to do the right thing. Now, if you're lucky, the homeowner will have some spare carpeting that they've saved away for exactly this kind of accident. An experienced carpet layer can surgically replace that using any one of two or three techniques. They can even do this if the homeowner doesn't have some spare carpeting, although that will add some additional cost, and the match may not be quite as good (depends on the color and style, which if the house is new, will hopefully still be available).

I don't condone even faux animal hides/shapes for rugs, but if you have it in mind just think of a shape and cut the fabric/shape, with a decent shear. The fabric sold as is,,,is designed as fabric, not carpet material and won't pull or shred like the weave of carpet often does when sheared. It's usually a Polyester, and matted on the back. I've used in for Theater, for years. It isn't strictly as durable as carpet material, but depending on its use and abuse it should be OK. Without knowing at all what animal or pattern you have in mind; a yard seems small; unless perhaps it's sold in 4/5/6 ft. widths? Certainly Joannes and other fabric stores carry varieties from bear type to Zebra, leopard, etc. Also the no slip is advised, but if you plan on having it in place for awhile there is also a mesh double sided tape specific to carpet that might work as well.

Q: I need help removing odours from our carpet. We're renting at the moment and the carpet was pretty grubby when we moved in but we've cleaned it up a fair bit with a wet/dry vaccuum cleaner. It's soaked through to the pad and possibly the concrete under that. You might think about painting a sealant on the concrete after you take up the ruined carpet and pad. Before putting down new carpet. That odor can seep back up from the concrete (or wood) subfloor for years to come. Every time it rains or is damp outside, you very likely will smell it again. Better yet, put down wood laminate or something instead of more carpet.
