FAQ

Does snow on the roof help or hurt my heating bill?
To building professionals, it means you are properly insulated. It does help a bit, in that without it, you'd be exposed to cold winds, which are worse in removing heat from the house. Typically, we like to see (and count on) some snow in how we design houses and size the structural elements of the house & roof. If you are talking over about 3', though, we might be getting nervous about the weight. Each city/area requires that we deal with normal snow loads of that area. But 3' deep means there's about 180 pounds per sq foot of weight on your roof. About that point, I get up there and remove most of it (I leave about 12" thick). Still same on the thermal characteristics but safer on structural. .
Help please, this home had a water pipe from meter brake in the basement as it was unoccupied/empty, the owner/builder replaced all the drywall, insulation, flooring, carpet, tile, roof, windows, hot water tank, furnace, bathroom and kitchen cabinets, new paint on all, basement ceiling was spray painted black (to hide something or to seal it?). the neighbor says the home was gutted and mold tested three times, its completely redone basically a new home inside, feedback please, it "looks" great
If everything has been replace, and fixed. I wouldn't worry. If the mold has been properly sealed and taking care of. You should be fine. But If you have any doubts trust your instance.
does insulation, with a high R value, in the attic prolong the life of the shingles on the roof.
No. Ventilation prolongs the life of a roof. Ventilation also reduces the air conditioning bill by a huge amount. If you use a lot of AC, also add an automatic attic fan. As for insulation, the idea is to have a good R factor, relative to where you live, directly above the highest living space ceiling in the house
p/t deck on a commercial rubber roof do we need closed cell insulation under deck to protect rubber?
You don't need it to protect the rubberoid roof however considering the relatively low cost of the closed cell foam it would be cheap insurance to add it. A more pressing concern would be the drainage details.
what effect does changing the pitch of a roof have on the insulation properties and durability of a roof?
As long as the insulation in the attic area is not changed then the insulating value should not change. As far as durability concerning the pitch of a roof it realy depends on the type of shingle you use.
Have a patio with metal roof, gets very hot during summer. Will Great Stuff insulate and stick to hot roof during summer? Thanks
I installed a metal roof 5 years ago. I stripped the roof down to the plywood and put down 30# felt. This was what the manufacturer recommended. The felt is not for insulation though. The company was Metal Sales out of PA. They are glad to give advise.
a roof that is built with the insulation covering the waterproof membrain is ?
a foolish product of college education in the building trades. it's pretty much taking over. real tradesmen saw that ship sink a while ago and are getting better at treading water.
What can i do to add more insulation in a addition in my house? The Roof is flat on this addition (no attic room for insulation there).Looks like it's only 4 or 5 inches thick, starts from the inside with 1/2 inch drywall and the rest is plywood, and then that black sheeting on the outside.IS THERE ANYTHING MORE THAT CAN BE DONE TO ADD MORE INSULATION ON THE OUTSIDE?, (i can't do anything on the inside since the ceiling is already low) SINCE IN THIS ROOM IS VERY HOT, even touching the celing feels warm, PLEASE HELP!
You could have foam roofing installed over the existing roof covering. Look up "foam roofing" on the Internet.
