Aluminium foil acts as a total barrier to light and oxygen (which cause fats to oxidise or become rancid), odours and flavours, moistness, and germs, it is used broadly in food and pharmaceutical packaging. The purpose of aluminium is to make long-life packs (aseptic processing|aseptic packaging) for drinks and dairy goods, which allows storing without refrigeration. Aluminium foil containers and trays are used to bake pies and to pack takeaway meals, ready snacks and long life pet foods.

Aluminium foil is widely sold into the consumer market, often in rolls of 500 mm (20 in) width and several metres in length. It is used for wrapping food in order to preserve it, for example, when storing leftover food in a refrigerator (where it serves the additional purpose of preventing odour exchange), when taking sandwiches on a journey, or when selling some kinds of take-away or fast food. Tex-Mex restaurants in the United States, for example, typically provide take-away burritos wrapped in aluminium foil.

Aluminium foils thicker than 25 μm (1 mil) are impermeable to oxygen and water. Foils thinner than this become slightly permeable due to minute pinholes caused by the production process.

Aluminium foil has a shiny side and a matte side. The shiny side is produced when the aluminium is rolled during the final pass. It is difficult to produce rollers with a gap fine enough to cope with the foil gauge, therefore, for the final pass, two sheets are rolled at the same time, doubling the thickness of the gauge at entry to the rollers. When the sheets are later separated, the inside surface is dull, and the outside surface is shiny. This difference in the finish has led to the perception that favouring a side has an effect when cooking. While many believe that the different properties keep heat out when wrapped with the shiny finish facing out, and keep heat in with the shiny finish facing inwards, the actual difference is imperceptible without instrumentation. The reflectivity of bright aluminium foil is 88% while dull embossed foil is about 80%.

Aluminium (or aluminum; see spelling differences) is a chemical element in the boron group with symbol Al and atomic number 13. It is a silvery white, soft, ductile metal. Aluminium is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon), and the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust. It makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth's solid surface. Aluminium metal is so chemically reactive that native specimens are rare and limited to extreme reducing environments. Instead, it is found combined in over 270 different minerals. The chief ore of aluminium is bauxite.

Aluminium is remarkable for the metal's low density and for its ability to resist corrosion due to the phenomenon of passivation. Structural components made from aluminium and its alloys are vital to the aerospace industry and are important in other areas of transportation and structural materials. The most useful compounds of aluminium, at least on a weight basis, are the oxides and sulfates.

Despite its prevalence in the environment, no known form of life uses aluminium salts metabolically. In keeping with its pervasiveness, aluminium is well tolerated by plants and animals. Owing to their prevalence, potential beneficial (or otherwise) biological roles of aluminium compounds are of continuing interest.

Q:So I just ate expire popcorn that was expired on July, 29,2010It is now August 31 2010.So it was expired a month ago.It is not the kernel one's you pop from the microwave, but its the already popped ones in the bagThe flavor is caramel popcorn and its in like an aluminum plastic foil bag. Will I get food sickness? Or what? Please help , I don't want to get sick :(
Nothing will happenThe worst that would happen is if it tasted bad but obviously that was not the case or you wouldn't have eaten itExpiration dates are mostly made up and pulled out of thin air for many food productsAlways use your sensesIf it smells good and tastes good, especially something like a dry product like popcorn, it is probably fineNEVER EVER heard of anyone getting sick from expired popcornRelaxYou are fine.
Q:I was taking my birth control pill today and accidentally ate a tiny piece of the tin foil backingShould I be concerned?
no dont worry atall chicki mean its not good to do often but it wont harm a tiny bit atall :-) when i was a child i used to chew and suck on tin foil-seriously every day adn it never did me any harm atalli dont think aluminium is good for you in high doses like if you use aluminium pans and not use a wooden spoon kinda thing (that scrapes the aluminium off the pans and into the food) but think about how many people do this daily adn dont even noticethis can definitely 100% not have harmed you in any way-do not worry :-) xx
Q:Found a necklace in old drawersSeemed like from the 80s or 70sits made of metal-like material (not sure what exactlylooks like silver but not sure)The color has changed n i think its prolly bcoz of rust (?) or simply being oxidizedi need help to return the color, anybody?
put it in some boiling hot water with some aluminum foil balls has to be enough water to cover it all, best with a large base and about 5 small balls of foil, leave it for about 30 mins and take out dry and should be back to normal.
Q:How many moles of aluminum do 6.3×10^24 aluminum atoms represent? Express your answer using two significant figures.please help me i cant figure it out! thanks
1 mole 6.02 x 10^23 atoms Divide 6.3 x 10^24 by 6.02 x 10^23 10.465 Round to two sig figs 10.
Q:I am doing a project and i am making a doveI just want to cover a styrofoam (plastifoam ball as it is called) in clay to make its bodyIt is the clay you bake to dryPlease i need an answer fast!
I wouldn't do itStyrofoam burns with quite a mess and the smoke is rather toxicIf you have polymer clay you might want to use something like aluminum foilAt least it won't melt.
Q:For Easter brunch, I need to keep waffles warm for about 1/2 hour while I make enough to serveDon't want them too dried out, but afraid if I cover them, they will be soggyAnybody out there with experience in this?
a beach house with a acre or soa big backyard with a pool lots of palm trees in carlsbad
Q:if the sphere were perfectly round and the walls were highly reflective to visible light, what would happen
I don't see that it would hurtJust cut out a circular piece about 1 1/2 wide and set it on top of the outer edgeIf you're worried, just check it every few minutesNecessity-the mother of invention!
Q:Okay, i really regret missing that school dayBut umHow do i calculate it? for example, for aluminum[Ne] 3s2 3p1 ( i thought you just add it so the valence electron is 3? or am i understanding it wrong?or for sulfur[Ne] 3s2 3p4valence electron 6?damn helplike can you explain it in a basic way? :(
This Site Might Help YouRE: what are the uses and characteristics of these? carbon, silicon, iron, kyrpton, chlorine, plutonium, lead, and silver you dont have to do all of them.i just cant find them.
Q:I have been recycling metal and aluminum for years now but it seems i could do more i live in GA and finally found they had a place to recycle paper tooI first took the next step and recycled plastics in our house but the curb side does not do aper and it is all te way down town to recycle it on my ownI an't beleive after 3 days we filled trash can fullI cannot g down that often means more trash cans.My 8year old has started going around neighborhood to recycle cans then he started doing plastic too since we only ones but now we went further when i found I place to take paper productsHow can this be less work and less expense of buying new trash cans nowto wait til i have a truck load to take.
Don't use so much to begin with Re-use whatever you canI use the back of one-sided junk mail and things I just HAD to print out for grocery lists and scratch paper Shredded paper takes up more room, only shred things with sensitive information If you have a garden, shredded paper that's mostly clean makes great dry material in the compostMulti-task your trips - don't drive to town just for recyclingBut if you have to get another bin or two, it's worth it in the long runInstead of a trash can perhaps use a Rubbermaid storage container or boxes from products you've bought recently (we us our boxes from Costco)Perhaps your 8 year old could talk to the nieghbors about recycling for themselves or getting a neighborhood program going so you're not storing their trash.
