Q: i wanna learn the motorcycle willy.?
Best perfomed wearing nothing but leather chaps and a leather beenie while riding in the San Francisco GLT parade. Someone there will teach you.
Q: I like the body of a scooter but the speed of a motorcycle. Assuming I put a motorcycle engine in a scooter (no need to address the mechanical issues involved) would it be classified as a scooter or motorcycle?
Per the Maryland Department of Transportation Laws, a motor scooter is classified as: - Has a seat for the operator - Has two wheels, one of which is 10in or more in diameter - Has a step-through chassis - Has a motor with a rating 2.7 brake horse power (bhp) or less, or 50cc or less - Is equipped with automatic transmission So to answer your question, I believe the moment you put a bigger engine on it, it will be classified as a motorcycle. Keep in mind though, if it is classified as a motorcycle, all of the laws of motorcycles then apply to you. Do you have a motorcycle endorsement on your license? Riding a 50cc scooter, you can usually get by without a special license, motorcycles require it. Also, insurance is higher on a motorcycle than it is on a scooter. Registration is higher, etc. So using those requirements, I would say a majority of real scooters in Maryland are classified as motorcycles. The 250-650cc scooters that allow for highway travel, and arent just little neighbor hood toys, are motorcycles.
Q: I am looking to buy my first motorcycle. I will not be able to ride this winter due to Vermont not being bike friendly with its snowy and cold winters though. I am looking at a used CBR600 RR for my first. What do you guys think about that as a first bike? Is it too powerful? Or can anyone suggest something that might be more appropriate for me?I lack true riding experience, but I still consider myself to be able to handle more then other rookies might be able to due to the natural motor talent I seem to have. What does everyone think? Thanks
I have a question regarding your statement: I lack true riding experience, but I still consider myself to be able to handle more then other rookies might be able to due to the natural motor talent I seem to have. Please define natural motor talent. Please understand, the ability to operate a four wheel vehicle does not translate into riding ability. Don't believe? That's OK. Read article below. Article is posted on the Suzuki GSX-R forum website. This is a group that promotes sport bikes. They do not recommend 600 cc sport bikes for the beginner. You Sir, are in that category, a beginner. A 150 mph motorcycle with a tall first gear, hair trigger handling, throttle and brakes are the qualities NOT desirable for the beginner. Second article follows offers the same advise. An organization that promotes sport bikes that recommend NOT start out on a high performance sport bike. Lastly, read third article to understand what can happen if you go down on a bike without all the riding gear.
Q: I understand you need a motorcycle license to operate a scooter over 50ccin this case a 149cc. But is there special classes specifically for mopeds? Because a motorcycle is totally different than a moped, so it would not make sense taking that class.
Scooters are usually two-wheel motorcycle-type motor vehicles 50 cc or less or 2 brake horsepower or less gas engines that have automatic transmissions. Mopeds also have 50 cc or less engines with two wheels, but have pedals and may be operated solely by human power. In order to legally operate scooters, mopeds, and other 2-3 wheel small engine motor vehicles, at least a Class E driver license and tag/registration are required. Persons 16 and older may operate a moped or ride as a passenger without a helmet. Persons under 16 may not operate a moped, but may ride as a passenger with protective headgear securely fastened upon their head.
Q: Can you add ABS braking to my motorcycle which is Honda VTX 1800.Is it advisable?
from the junkyard to your bike remember how anti-lock was only for pulling trailers then incorporated to race cars first and eventually adopted for passenger cars that was after the weight ratio was computer controlled So you could either put an oldfashioned one on and suck or recalibrate your ECU for a few grand
Q: I bough a used bike and after learning all the various necessary checks, realized that the dealer left the brake fluid at the low fill lines. I want to top up and got the recommended fluid for my Triumph Speedmaster (DOT 4). But I have no idea what brand is in there. I have to assume it is also the recommended DOT 4. Would it be safe to top up? Also, are you supposed to discard what‘s left in the bottle after a top-up?
yes the airbags are more like helper springs than the actual suspension unless you have a little car then the airbag will handle the suspensoin duties
Q: Open the first time to hold the clutch, take the time to put half, and so completely when the full release, and then open to half how to hang files, brake with clutch, how brakes half, who can tell me ah
Before the brake, to the first brake clutch
Q: the motorcycle will not decrease speed by gentle application of brakes, I have to floor the rear brakes and grab the front brake calliper.is there something wrong with my brakes?
I agree that Philip's down home wisdom is astounding, but Choppy made a very good point. Some older bikes needed an Arnold Swartzenegger type grip to stop. An older bike with a single front disc is going to need more grip than a double disc and an older, single piston double disc will most likely need more than a modern, multi-piston double disc setup. Sometimes brake shoes or pads will become glazed, especially when they have been used lightly for long periods of time. Once glazed, it takes tremendous pressure to get them to stop. The best thing to do is to remove them and use sandpaper to rough them up for better grip. there's also a big difference between pad material, especially in wet conditions. I've had pads that worked great when dry but in wet weather I could have dragged my feet and gotten stopped sooner. Old Honda front disc setups had the caliper mounted on a hinged affair that needed to be adjusted correctly. Old hoses on disc brakes get spongy with age and no amount of bleeding will firm them up. If you can mash the brake lever against the handgrip, you either have air in the system or the hoses should be replaced. On rear drum brakes, the problem can be as simple as the rod between the lever and brake needing adjustment. On rear disc setups, you may need to adjust the lever to that it sets higher and you don't have to bend your foot downward so far. Hose swelling on rear discs usually isn't as big of a deal because you normally have much less hose length compared to the front. Can you lock up your rear brake? If not, then you certainly do have a problem.
Q: What are semi metallic brakes and how do they differ from others?
Screw metallic go to Ceramic Brakes, I got 50k out of a set, I will never use other type.
Q: What are things you can do about motorcycle disc brake pads scrubbing the disc?
Clean the brake pads. The brake material gets embedded with brake dust and road debris. Remove the pads from the caliper. Score the pads with a wire brush to remove the loose stuff. Clean the pads with brake cleaner (available at bike shops and auto parts stores). Spray the brake disk (both sides) with the brake cleaner and wipe them with clean paper towels. Clean them until the towels no longer get dirty from the cleaning process.
