- I shampoo my carpet a couple times a month. I have 3 dogs and kids. I like to keep it clean. You should talk to the landlord to see what they can do for you. I think they should have had new carpet put in or this carpet cleaned before you moved in.....someone else's dirty carpet is very disgusting!!!

- It's beyond repair. It would need re-dyeing back to the original color. Bleach was the worst thing she coulda used.

- There are pretty much three things it could be.... 1 - Powder - There are several cleaning products that are on the market today that people sprinkle on the rug so that it smells good - every time you vacuum more will come out till it is all gone. 2 - Dust - If it is an old rug then there is a good chance that it is simply dust. 3 - Fibers - If the rug is not in good condition then sometimes the fibers break apart and fall out when you vacuum but this is most common with old silk rugs. If you think it is one of the top two then simply turn over the rug and slowly vacuum the from the back (make sure to use a vacuum with bristles). The vibrations will cause whatever is in the rug to fall out. After you are done - turn the rug over and vaccume the front side, collect the dust from the floor and repeat the process till almost all the white powder is gone. Hope I was helpful :)

- Try and get the owner to replace the carpet or at least pay to have it professionally cleaned. Do-it-yourself steam cleaners do not work nearly as well as the professional cleaners can get it. if all that fails, go rent a Rug doctor and do it yourself, but like I said it will not work as well. Also, try and find out if there is a particular location for the smell as it could be mildew or something like that in a certain area of the apartment. you could even have a leaky pipe causing it to smell bad. BTW, if this is a basement apartment, it might be a damp smell from being underground.

- Without doubt it must be shampooed first as K M has already said. The reason is also the same, that carpets do in fact lose their shape due to shrinking , etc and then when you get it stretched, the stretcher will get it into a perfect rectangle.

- Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) is great for absorbing odours. Sprinkle on the rug (the reverse as well as the front if necessary) leave for a couple of hours and vacuum off. You can also put a few drops of your favourite essential oil onto the rug to freshen up the smell. Also, as daft as it sounds, to get rid of chemical smells from the room itself such as glue, paint etc peel an onion, chop it in half and cover it with water, leave it in the room overnight and it will absorb the smell (don't ask me why this works but it does!) - No you can t put wall to wall carpet and have it not effect the lower carpet because on the installation needed. But small area rugs and larger rugs can be used and then taken with you as you move. - Q: Some wax fell on the carpet(quite dense) and i tried the old trick ironing down a piece of paper on top of it to lift the wax off. It has worked for me before. But now, part of the paper has stuck to the carpet. I tried ripping it off real quick but now there's just a huge patch of paper stuck right into the carpet. How can i get it off/out ? Help ?
- try get a saw and try to saw the paper and wax off.. NOTE:ONLY AN IDEA!!! NOT A SUGGESTION!!! results may vary....possible results: bald spot on the carpet,injured fingers.
