- Q: for my homework : the question was explain how a skyscraper crane uses physics moments but no where can i find out the answer and dont want a detention ekkk x
- OK... So what has your homework actually asked you to explain? Can you post the question...? There are moment forces going through a crane, is the aim of the homework simply for you to explain what a moment force is using a specific example ? A crane can be thought of in simple terms as a cantilever, ie one supported end and one free end, the lever arm force as it is sometimes referred to in schools is actually the moment force i.e. the moment for a crane with a boom L=40m long lifting a load of P=10kN would beP*L = 10*40 = 400 kNm, this is ignoring the self weight of the boom, if the boom weighed W=1.5kN/m (thats per meter, not to be confused with kNm which is kilo newton meters) then the moment generated by the self weight would be (WL^2)/2 = (1.5*40^2)/2 = 1200kNm so the total moment would be 1600kNm, so just remember for a point load the moment is force * distance from support ( in cantilevers) hope this helps... :)
- Q: I have an odd fear of construction cranes. I literally get chills and almost dizzy anytime I see cranes. I get very nervous and almost want to cry. I know this is so odd but, I've seen phobias of things that are even more odd so I wonder...is there a phobia for my fear? Does anyone else share my fear?
- Rat phobia!! I don't know the exact term but I find them very disgusting.. I can't stand seeing one d*mn creature even on tv.. I also have a fear of ghosts even if I haven't seen one.. My biggest fear is losing my support system (friends and family).. that's like losing my own life. Libra, Pisces rising
- Q: What kind of equipment must be installed on luffing trolley of horizontal luffing tower crane?
- The car must have a support wheel to prevent the trolley from hanging in the middle.
- Q: I have always wondered how they get cranes off the top of huge buildings when they finish building them.I have had many people tell me how they THINK the cranes are taken off. But I want to know for sure. Can anyone give me some evidence? A web site or something??When I say big building I mean like 100 storeys.I have been told things ranging from a helicopter takes them offToThey build tracks down the side of the building and drive it downAndThey pull it to pieces and take it down the elevator. These MAY be real but sound like wild guesses to me.So does anyone know the answer?
- Large okorder .
- Q: I have a question about cranes...does anyone know what the maiximim weight is that they can lift. A friend and I were discussing this and i was just wanting to know if anyone might have the answer. Thanks guys
- Do not know where you live but I worked in a Shipyard in South Mississippi That had Cranes which picked up Modules which weighed 100 tons. Most were in the range of 50 to 70 tons the limiting factor was the range of the lift away from the crane. The further away from the Crane the less the load limit but the Cranes were rail mounted so they could traverse and carry the load anywhere. We had one Crane capable of handling 500 tons, a real monster. These are all located at Pascagoula Mississippi. Most were imported from Germany.
- Q: I just seen pics of a crane fly and not sure if I see crane flies in my house or mosquitos now. And do crane flies bite?
- Really easy: A crane fly has no long piercing mouthpart: they feed mainly on nectar Female mosquitos have long piercing mouthparts, males are smaller and have shorter mouthparts for sucking nectar from flowers. Common crane flies are almost always bigger than a mosquitos.
- Q: Trying to find an estimated weight for a mobiles crane with a 5 tonne capacity ?
- It is not the weight of the crane alone that matters. But to some extend if the crane is light, this could create a torque when carrying a heavy load and the crane could collapse. Therefore I am speculating that inorder to lift 5Tonnes, the crane must be more than 5 tonnes to balance out the moments resulting in a torque The internal structure of bolts and trusses must be able to handle heavy loads and their are several calculations done to find each forces acting on the members of a truss. For eg: By using Pin Joint Analysis
- Q: Just curious... I'm not in construction and always wondered...
- The top sections of the mast beneath the crane are removed one at a time and lowered to the ground. The top section of the crane has hydraulic rams that lower it down one mast section at a time. It is hard to describe without a diagram or photos. See photos at attached link. In some design, the jacking portion is at ground level. The crane jacks itself up so a 20' section of the mast can be unbolted and slide out. Then the jack is lowered so the process can be repeated. See second link for photos and a more detailed explanation.
- Q: I'm trying to workout the best height of a truss for a ship-to-shore container crane project. The crane will have a 65m outreach, 18m center section and 15m backreach. I was thinking in the region of 2m-3m truss height.Any input would be great. Thanks
- Jimmy: The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) produces design standards for many types of cranes: see the link below. Many crane owners, licensing and governmental authorities having jurisdiction over cranes require design, fabrication and testing to ASME standards.
