There are different schools or versions of WCF. There is also th Tibetan White Crane, which is related to the Lama Fist. I have no real knowledge of Tibetan style. First thing is, if you are referring to the Fukien WCF: it is not like most martial arts you are familiar with. It was developed by a woman named Fang Chi Niang. Her father was a master of the 18 Lohan Style. It is an Internal art that uses concepts, movement and intention as the foundation of its arsenal. White Crane fist will develop the ability to execute explosive power against an attack. There really is not too much punching-type striking. When you see a closed fist, it usually is a grappling technique. Palm thrusting, claw grapples, spear hand and finger thrusts are used. The foundation training for WCF is San zhan, also spelled San jan or San Chien. The latter is the closest since it is a Fukienese art. San Chien develops power and rootedness. Fukien WCF has influenced the Five Ancestor Fist, which contains WCF concepts. It is also the predecessor to what is known today as Karate, both the Shuri and Naha lineages. If you are fortunate enough to have a Fukien WCF school near you, you would be a fool not to take full advantage. I have to travel an hour to see my Sifu. And if I had to travel more, I would. - Q: My understanding is that under Crane doctrine the tax basis of the property to begin with is Equity Invested + Financing (recourse or nonrecourse doesn't matter). i.e. 20K down + 80K purchase money mortgage = 100K. What if the property is appraised for only 80K right before purchase but purchaser paid 100K? Is the tax basis 80K or 100K.In other words, is the tax basis the actual assessed value of the property or is the tax basis the total investment?Thanks,Ben
- Your understanding of Crane is correct. For purposes of calculating the gain on sale, the basis would be $100k. What Crane really said was that the net proceeds would have to include any assumed debt, in addition to any cash received -- basically that you had to include the debt on both ends of the transaction if my reading is correct. (That jives with the example in Commissioner v Tufts et al, 81-1356 so I think we're correct on that.) Where basis gets interesting is when you are calculating depreciation. At least when you convert a residential property to business use -- i.e. a rental -- you use the LESSER of the cost basis (Crane) or the FMV on the date that the property is placed in business(rental) service. In your example, the depreciable basis would be $80k since that was the lower. For calculating the gain on sale, the cost basis would still be $100k (adjusted down for any depreciation allowed or allowable while in business use of course).

- Build form the top, when they build these huge cranes, they build the top section, lift that up and build the next section underneath it, set it down to release the lift off the top section and lower it to the second section. Lift those 2 sections from the bottom, build the third section underneath it, and so on. You need to lift securely, like on all 4 sides for stability, and that leaves the corners free to build the next section.
