- Q: We laid tile in our shower and I used too much grout. Now I need to know how to get the grout lines even without damaging the tile. Any help would be appreciated.
- thats a problem, grout is cement , it will take something thats abrasive, like a wheel grinder, ? got me stumped i,v been at this for 50 yrs, never have figgered that one out,
- Q: I have ten 4x4 ceramic tile that I cannot find new. What is an easy way to clean the backs off so I can re-use them?
- There are two different ways i know if to set ceramic tile, one is essentially to use a grout, the second is to use a glue. I suspect the hardened glue would present more of a problem than the grout. Someone has already mentioned a chisel, which is worth a try but you have to be gentle and have the front of the tile clamped on a surface such as a newspaper to protect the face of the tile from abrasion. The second might be the use of a high speed rotary tool. Since I owned one of those I have found innumerable uses for it. Usually you can get a bag of bits that includes a small sanding drum with sanding sleeves that go on the drum. This is also worth a try and would not risk breaking the tile. Avoid sanding to the point where the tile gets real hot though to avoid breaking it with thermal stresses. If it is a glue on the back you could still try the chisel or the rotary tool, but if that didn't work you could try a few high end solvents like acetone or xylene to see if that would soften the hardened glue. Perhaps even soaking them in oil for a week or so would soften the glue. good luck
- Q: Last year I had my bathroom remodeled. I had a new tub and tile installed. I asked the tile man to put the tiles together and not to have grout lines. He insisted that they HAD to have grout. I told him to put in the smallest, narrowest grout line as possible. Well now the tile grout is looking yucky. I know how to clean it so that is not the question. I just want to know why do you have to have grout in the first place? If the tiles are pushed up against each other with the sides touching and then put in grout in the very small area. why would a professional tile man insist that it MUST have grout?
- How the heck do you plan on keeping your tile from shifting? Use some common sense. Something has to hold them in place, and if you didn't have grout, they'd be all over the place and they'd break and crack and chip and dirt would be all up in them and they would be even more difficult to clean. When you want tile, the grout comes w/ the pkg. If you didn't want that, get vinyl or something similar. Sorry, don't want to sound negative, but you have to see things from thier point of view before you start to argue w/ the man. Please research a little bit. Mandy Architectural Building Tech.

- Are you laying ceramic tile or vinyl or laminate? Ceramic tile can be a do it yourself job, but it's hard and you need a wet saw and cement backer board to make sure it will lay right and that you can cut the tiles. Laminate flooring is much easier to install, but you still have to measure and prepare the surface so it's flat and so that the tiles won't shift. Sheet laminate can be easier overall, but all flooring requires a lot of prep work, and it's always more expensive than you think it will be. With that said, it can also change the entire look of a room which is good! GOOD LUCK!!!!

- Without more detail; I have to ask your definition of Torn Apart. I'll assume you mean separated from the substrate? Certainly it would help to know WHY? It would also help to know what the substance of the substrate is; the method of tile install; type of mortar (mastic) and the general condition of any tile that remains in place. Do you have extra tile? Do you have tools such as a Diag. Grinder; you might use to remove old mortar and grout for the substrate and back of each tile piece? I'm remediating 11,000 sq. ft. of tile now; installed improperly in a commercial building basement that floods. Tedious work; but do-able. Steven Wolf

- There is paint available for tiles,but I would be Leary of using them in a kitchen that requires so much use of cleaning products.I see no problem with with the white tiles Look for a rug that contains white,beige and perhaps a darker color of brown,You don't want everything to be one homogenized color.Bring in white accessories,like canisters.

- You just get a chisel and a hammer and pry them from the wall. If they are on concrete, then you use a really big chisel and hammer. *The sheetrock may come down with the tile.
