Q: my tiles are filthy....theres white dust every where and I guess what ever they used to patch the wall or something on the floor....I swept and mopped but it still looks horrible.: tile lab makes a heavy duty cleaner and stripper for tiles you can try that.

Q: We‘re renovating an old house, and the ceramic tile on the bathroom walls is just awful. I‘d like to replace the wall tile with beadboard. The tiles appear to be mortared directly onto the drywall. Is it a good idea to install the beadboard directly over the ceramic tile? Or should we chip of the tile or remove the lower portion of the drywall? I‘d like to do this as easily as possible, but not at the risk of shoddy workmanship.Also - all the beadboards I‘ve looked at are either painted or primed on the front surface, with a bare wood surface on the rear (glued to the wall). Is it advisable to paint/prime the rear surface as well before installation? With all the steam and moisture in a bathroom, I can envision the panels buckling. Q: i‘m thinking about laying my own tile. ( this way i could save $2700) yeah, i know its a pain int he butt. BUT i‘m still going to do it because i like doing my own work. I‘m laying down 24x24 tiles. do you have any advice or secrete or techniques to offer? its a straight edge tile so i was thinking about using no spacers. I was also told to spread thinset on the tile in addition to the cement floor.: Yes, 24x24 square edge tile is very accurately sized and can be laid with 1/16 joint. But only with careful attention to every detail. The slab needs to be dead on, less than 1/8 in ten feet variation. If a 10' straight edge placed on the slab has a space of more than 1/8 under it you will need self-leveling mortar. Flat trowel the back of each tile with thinset just prior to setting it. Move the notched trowel so all the ridges are parallel. Do not move the trowel in random directions. You will trap air under the tile and when you try to level them thinset will ooze out and make a mess. Try to apply thinset with the accuracy that once the tile is set it doesn't need to be adjusted. If the floor is flat, the thinset is consistant and the tile is accurate, you can't help but have a good floor I would reccomend at least 3/16 grout. Finish the grout as flat as possible, with new sponges and minimal water. Pre-seal the tile before grouting to make clean-up easy.

How many tiles are neither diagonal tiles nor edge tiles?: If there are 121 tiles and both tiles and floor are square, this means there are 11 by 11 tile used on the floor (square root of 121 is 11) So if we exclude the edges, this means we have 9 by 9 tiles And there are 9 tiles on each diagonal but the one in the center is shared so we have total of 9+9-1=17 tiles on diagonals of this inner tiles with 9 by 9 So for 9 by 9 tiles we have 9x9=81 tiles and excluding 17 tiles on diagonals; the answer is 81-17=64 tiles.

Help.....: If its floor tile I wouldn't bother, it's easier to just replace the flooring. If it's wall tile they make a special primer now specifically to use on tiles. You just paint the tiles with that and then paint over it with whatever colour you want. I can't remember what it's called tho. I got some at Home Depot (in Canada) and it was easy to use. Just talk to someone in the Decor department and they should know what product to use.
