- Q: My new home has a kitchen with glazed ceramic tiles covering most of the walls.The colour is basically honey brown, but there‘s a hideous purple border (in the same tile size shape) running horizontally vertically all over the place - I‘d say that 20% of the tiles are this colour.I want to reduce all the tiles to one (new) colour.Two guys (both pros) have this to say:GUY 1: Cheapest solution (and least noisy/disruptive) is to use a ‘glass enamel paint‘ over the tiles. I went online and found several manufacturers of this stuff.GUY 2: Scoffed at this and said there was no other way than retiling the whole kitchen.Guy 1 is adamant that it can be done, and the job will last if enough care is taken in preparing the surface.Is he right?Has anyone tried this ‘re-enamelling‘ technique, and were the results OK?Thanks!
- Guy 3 Says: Break out the offensive tiles and replace them with ones more appealing. Re-grout. You can do this yourself. 1. remove grout from tiles that must go 2. carefully break offending evil tiles with hammer and chisel. 3. clean substrate 4. Place new friendly tiles of same dimensions in space using organic mastic as a binder. 5. Re-grout with non-sanded grout. You really need to know a little more than this, but it is really not that hard, and very rewarding.

- go with what you want that's the first rule of any interior design whats the point if you hate it. However sun rooms get very hot and cool whitelight coloured tiles are very welcome on the feet. I take it the sun room is in direct access to the garden if this is the case tiles are easier to clean than wood. That said wood does look great. an interior designer is paid to come up with ideas that you wouldn't not paid to tell you exactly what to do.
- Q: I have just had a room tiled with porcelain tiles. They are non-shiny matte tiles and it was suggested to me that i should use a sealer. What sealer would be better to use, a water based or solvent based? What are the differences between using the two?
- Penetrating sealer.. Although a water based product, a couple of coats will last years. Mist on( w/ a spray bottle) wipe it thoroughly over the tile and grout with a damp cloth. I dampen a cloth with the sealer. Let set for 10/15 minutes and wipe excess off amd dry. Don t let it puddle and dry. Repeat at least once , twice if possible. The grout must be set for a minimum of 3 days with all the excess grout has all cleaned off. I ve have only used 2 brands over the years Cerama Seal and Miricle 511. I m sure theres others out there but I stick to what works.. Any questions you can e mail through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
- Q: In order to be able to tile the windows (instead of the white moulding) like in the second kitchen, what steps would I have to take? Just remove the moulding on the inside then tile?
- Yes, carefully remove the moldings before tiling. Using a utility knife, cut the caulking between the molding and the wall first so you can pry them off with a prybar or small putty knife. In the picture, it looks like they also tiled inside the window frame as well. I would consider this carefully, as those windows are probably designed to be removed from the inside and tiling there could prevent you from replacing them in the future.
- Q: CAN I LAY TILE WITH NO GROUT LINES?
- The other Steve is correct. Tile is designed specifically to be grouted, most importantly to keep dirt, etc. out of even the most minute space if you BUTT them together, beyond that aesthetics is another purpose. You can create a grout line as thin as 1/8 inch. The issue is in the bonding agents of the grout, and it's intended purpose. All that said however CAN is certainly something valid. Will it remain a valid/viable installation? Doubtful. Since you don't add detail about the WHY of your notion, it's difficult to assess the issue. It would seem as an assumption that you might be happier with a smooth, seamless surface, which you wouldn't get by butting tiles with no grout lines either. Steven Wolf Thousands of sq. ft. of tile
- Q: I just finished laying tile in my shower. How long do I need to wait before I grout? If it makes any difference they are simple 4 inch white tiles.Also, just out of curiosity, I was told I needed to spread the adhesive on the wall and place the tiles over that. It seems like it would have been easier to apply the adhesive to the back of the tiles. Especially the last few tiles. Does this make any difference?
- if it's a shower.spread the adhisive on the wall.it helps to water proof that material that you have on the wall.as for the floor you can grout a few hours later.the floor should be put down after the wall.if you did it already ver it with plastic and tape.when you tile and grout the wall.it will mess the floor up.good luck.
