- Q:My mothers house has 9 tiles on her bathroom floor and I understand they are made with asbestos. Some of the tiles are starting to lift and I am concerned about how to remove and dispose of them, any suggestions?
- Asbestos is only dangerous when it is an airborne particulate. If you do not sand it or grind it up, you're pretty safe. If the bathroom floor is structurally sound, I'd cover the existing floor, tile all, with 1/4 plywood, then lay a piece of vinyl flooring over it. To remove the tiles, you can use a heat gun (looks like a hair dryer) a 3 putty knife. Heat the tile slide the putty knife under it...should take 20 minutes to an hour to get them up. You will not be releasing any asbestos fibers, as they will still be embedded in the tile. As to disposal, check with your local landfill about where you can dispose of the removed tile. Good luck...
- Q:I‘d like to recover my kitchen floor with linoleum tiles - mainly because they are relatively inexpensive, I can do it myself and I can do it at my pace (not moving all of my appliances out in a day). Has anyone used them and if so, what do you like/dislike about them?
- I think you're talking about Peel and Stick Tiles? If so, I'm not sure I'd use them in your kitchen unless you are an extremely clean person. I used Peel and Stick tiles in a rental house we own. The tenant got so much grease under the tiles by the oven that the tiles came unglued and were sliding around. Spaces of the old floor were showing between the tiles, and the spaces between were filthy. These tiles came up really easily, but the tiles in the rest of the kitchen were extremely hard to remove. It took days of work with a screw driver to peel those off. After I had removed all the tiles, I couldn't get any more Peel and Stick tiles to stick to the floor no matter how much I cleaned it. We finally used Vinyl Sheet flooring. (The stuff that is one large piece of vinyl.) We figured that the vinyl sheet doesn't have to be glued down and there aren't any individual tiles to pull apart from each other. The vinyl sheet flooring is still inexpensive. You can get it at some Big Box stores. It's a little tricky to lay the vinyl. We made a template using pages from a magazine. We taped them together, then moved the template carefully to the vinyl sheet. We then cut the sheet and moved the flooring to the kitchen. This worked, and I think it will survive better than then Peel and Stick tiles did. You would have to move all the appliances out of the kitchen in order to lay this type of flooring, though.
- Q:I am installing 4.5 x 4.5 porcelain tiles on a drywall kitchen backsplash. Applying Omnigrip mastic using a 1/4 x 3/16 vnotch trowel. The tiles have a waffle grid pattern on the back which is about 1/16 deep. I tested the application of one tile and noticed that the mastic did not fill all the waffle depressions. Are they supposed to be all filled? DO I have to backbutter the tiles? Am I using the correct trowel size? Please help!P.S. What is the purpose of the waffle pattern in the first place?

- For your best adhesion. its best to start out with a clean wood sub floor. Depending on what is down now, its best to put a new luan sub floor. These you can sometimes go over whats there now and sometimes its best to rip out and start new. Always start from the middle and work to the out side. But if your tile lays out to less than a 1/2 tile, move the tile over the center line by a 1/2 tile. Now MOST peel n stick are directional so they must be layed all in one direction.. This is personal preference, but I like to have a whole tile at the doorway and what ends up in back is the way it is unless its a real small pc. Dry lay out the tiles to see what you like.. - I can't believe I, as the lone female answering, am going to have the right answer. Yes, you need backerboard. Simply put, you are tiling. Have you ever lifted a box of those tiles? And can you imagine one of them on that wall? Now, how about 10 of those boxes? You see, you are putting up tile and tile cement and tile group, all very heavy items, onto what may well be simple sheetrock. Yes, you need backerboard. Specifically, you want cement board, which is specifically designed to be used with tile and be waterproof. You see, in your zest to prove you can do it, you may well have a moisture issue come from an overlooked mistake in the tiling. Maybe it's the caulk at the tub seal, maybe it's in a corner, maybe it comes from an awkward merging of two tiles. Whichever it may be, you want a waterproof surface which will stay intact from such an issue ... sheetrock, no matter how nicely painted prior, simply won't do that. Yes, you need cement board. Ask anybody at your local home center if you doubt me ... and I, as the lone female, will now bid adieu.
- Q:I have hot water radiant heat in a concrete slab that leaks occasionally so I can‘t put carpet on it. Do I dare put ceramic tile over it? Maybe the tile would keep the moisture down.
- If you are positive it is leaking do not put anything over it. Fix the leak. It is not as bad as it sounds. If you know exactly where the leak is it is relatively easy to cut the concrete and repair the leak and then re-surface that area. Covering a leak with ceramic tile will only trap the moisture underneath it and eventually mold will develop in the grout joints.
