- Q: CAN YOU LAY TILE OVER TILE
- If your existing tile is tight to the floor and in good shape (no cracks, loose tile, loose grout) yes you can. You need to use a thin set with a very high latex content like TEC Superflex. Be sure that the existing tile and grout is perfectly clean and there are no sealers left on the grout. This is an industry accepted method.
- Q: We have not picked out the tile yet, is one type better or worse/easier or harder to install?
- Ceramic tile is a lot harder to work with than linoleum or vinyl tiles. A reputable store will assist you and answer all your questions about installation when you've picked the tile you want. Take accurate measurements now.
- Q: In my Bathroom, I want to update the tile. It‘s the small rough octagon shape in white w/black speckles. Grout is also white. I hate it, stays dirty. Thought about sanding it and putting a dye and sealer on it, but I dont know if this can be done. 2nd choice is replacing the grout w/black but I am back with the white tile, does anyone know if the sanding and dyeing it would work? I thought I would try this first, it would be cheap, because I have a sander and I can do it myself.. and thought I could maybe use the dye you use to dye clothes (possible?) and then just a polyurthane to seal. If I do anything else like, remove ceramic tile, this may be costly..Any suggestions?
- This tile is hard to get up. It comes on a 12 x 12 paper mesh, so getting one up doesn't help with the next one. The good news is that if you could clean it up, it has a wonderful retro look. You can buy grout colorant and that would be the easiest soloution. (Dark charcoal would be best. Black grout is almost as hard to keep as white.) If you are really tired of looking at it and you can't be convinced to pull it up, you can put a thin layer of quik crete on top of it and start with another floor altogether, IF raising the lever nearly 1/2 won't interfere with the doors or cause people to trip as they come into the bath. The thinnest floor tile is about 1/4 thick, and these will be small tiles again, on the order of what you have. You can get 1 x 1's, 2 x 2's, and 3 x3's squares, in porcelain, in a variety of colors. (They are designed for shower floors.) The next thinnest, yet larger floor tiles are going to be about 3/8 thick. By the time you have quik crete and mastic, you are looking at a 1/2 rise in floor height. If you start going over 12 x 12 sizes, the tiles get thicker still. Whatever tiles you select, make sure they have some texture and are designed for floors. (You don't want to install a hazard, slipping the first time you have wet feet.) You should be able to find how-to books about tile demo and installation at big home stores like Lowe's and Home Depot.

- It depends also how well they stick to the underlying surface. make sure surface is clean and dust free. I used a flooring recently that looks like 12 x 12 tile but the pieces are 12 x 36 and they have an overlay that sticks together. it is a floating floor. Has been trouble free. Good luck

- Hardwoods are classic. You can never go wrong with hardwood floors as far as resell value. I renovated two years ago. We have a 1500 sq/ft home. We did tile in the bath and hardwoods everywhere else. My husband wanted to tile the kitchen as well but we were talked out of it due to labor costs. Cleaning tile grout is troublesome, sealing it is ineffective if you have food stains or mud or something. My tile floors are very pretty but I regret it. Be sure to get real hardwood with NO laminate at all. Some hardwood floors are real wood on the surface but laminated onto a synthetic bottom. Be careful that way. Things to ask before choosing: How many times can they be refinished? Are they glued or nailed? (Glued are crappy, nailing is much more effective.) How do I clean them? (I use a steamer, no chemicals.) Will my subfloor support the hardwood? (we had to install a new subfloor). Oak and Hickory are the best HARD woods to choose from.

- Q: I just finished grouting my tile yesterday I want to remove the haze with vinager should I let the grout cure for three days,then seal it and then scrub the whole floor including going over the grout lines (which would be then sealed) scrubbing with a sponge and avoiding the non cured grout is working but is taking far too long
- Clear water should work. You're supposed to get all that off before you leave it to dry. Do seal it after the curing process. Even dark grouts get dirty. Sealing helps a lot.
