Q:On TV they always fill a room with sectionals. How do you decide what is too big? I have a decent sized family room (14x14) and I'm considering a sectional in the middle of the room instead of against walls (which is more traditional). They do it on the design shows all the time but I'm curious if there are particular guidelines or rules...
The size of your room determines the size of your furniture pieces and not just the footprint they take up but the physical size. Big bulky pieces will take up more visual space. 14x14 is not large enough for a sectional unless it was a smaller one and even then it may not be able to float in that size room. Lining the walls with furniture is not traditional but usually about lack of design knowledge. If you want to float the furniture in that room you might do better to get either two small sofas facing each other in the center or one small sofa and a couple of chairs on the other side with an ottoman in the center to act as a coffee table or extra seating. Measure the furniture pieces you are interested in, make a template of your room and the pieces and see if it works. But again, no big overstuffed pieces, just simple clean lines.
Q:My Sofa has these Mahogany legs. There seems to be just some white scuff marks on them. (I can't seem to see anything to deep). Whats the best way to get them off? Am I just cleaning them?
mahogany legs suggest these legs are not just that colour but also made of wood. if you are seing scratches but no depth to them you are probably seeing the top layer of varnish marked. varnish if often used to protect floors and furniture. varnish also comes in colours like mahogany. varnish creates a layer above the wood that protects from scratching and such. but when the varnish scratches youll probably not notice them very well and mostly when light shines on the surface. if its not scratches from the varnish i would use HG sofa cleaner is its some sort of dirt or grease. this can be used on floors, furniture, sofas .... very very good stuff and very professional. if it is the varnish youll have to sand down and repaint/stain with varnish or repaint with the same mahogany colour and hopefully the new varnish will fill out a new layer of protection thatl have a fresh new look dont use magic eraser which is mentioned above, shouldnt be used on wood or material/fabrics we use that to clean shelves and that. all dr. power stuff wouldnt be great in your situation. dr. power make magic erazer
Q:hya i have a leather sofa and it is worn Not as Colour wise as in Flat as a pancake All the Stuffing in side it is like flat where we been sitin on it so Long XD I Dont wanna Spend money on to get it Done as i Priced That and it Not worth getting that done would be better off getting a new one but if i can Like some how inflate it back up my own way it will save Me pockets... !! Ideas i had is Make a small hole in the side to Fit A pole in there to loosen it up inside Then Sew the Hole back up! ormake a Hole and Fill it up With the Stuffing in side there Eny them work or a another way off doin it Plz Say :)
Cut the seam on the leather sofa cushions and fill it with kapok to the desired firmness. Then resew the seam using a proper thread made for sewing leather.
Q:HM Ausin high back sofa in need of new leather seating cushion covers, otherwise it looks good. Is it worth the money and how much would should I expect to spend?
You will NEVER match the leather, so don't even consider that remedy. However, HM is a very good quality sofa, so I would highly consider having the seat back cushions reupholstered in a rich tapestry fabric. The look is very fashionable the cost will be RELATIVELY minimal. Call the best upholsterer you can afford cause this will be a worthwhile investment.
Q:who invented the sofa bed?
Fred Sofa, a Hungarian engineer in the 19th century. The Swedes claim it was Alfred Ikea, the famous inventor and founder of IKEA, but that's not true. Wrong forum
Q:How can I repair a cigarette burn in my sofa?
They used to make this powdered fabric glue. You would take a piece of fabric from somewhere else on the item in question, slice the fabric up into the consistency of fine tobacco, mix it with the powder, put it over the hole or damaged area, place paper over it, and apply a hot iron. It would blend in with the surrounding fabric, and you'd have an instant repair. Try fabric stores, they might know what the stuff is.
Q:I can not find a OFA BED anywhere for a cheap price....im on a budget so it cant be more than $380......if i DO find a sofa bed, the SHIPPING will raise the price thru the roof.....i WOULD go to a local furniture store but none carry specifically sofa beds. I find futons, daybeds, etc. but NOT a sofa bed.!!!=( does anyone have a good website for an inexpensive yet comfortable sofa bed?? I'd appreciate it truly!
You won't find a new sofa bed for $380. Check Craig's List, the Penny Saver or the newspaper.
Q:I own an antique empire sofa and am curious if it belongs to a particular make.I think possibly it may be an art nouveau sofa. It has swans carved into the front of the arms, as well as some very intricate detailing at the base of the sofa and on the feet.Would anyone be able to provide me with some links or some information that may be able to help me figure this out on my own?
I'd suggest you go to a local library and look in the antique section for patterns and detailings specific to the noveau period. To know what it is made out of would also be helpful, to see if the materials corresponded to the time period. Google for notable furniature makers of the period and see if the design of your sofa fits the typical design of a certain craftsperson. The best thing to do would be to ask a antiques dealer, historian or someone with that kind of knowledge. It doesn't have to be expensive, there is likely to be someone in your community with an active interest in that soft of thing.
Q:My wife and I purchased a velvet chenille sofa a while back, and have noticed that whenever any liquid (even just water) gets on the sofa, it leavs a spot. We tried cleaning one of these spots with the cleaner we were given, and it only made the spot bigger.Unfortunatley we seem to be on the losing side of a battle with the waranty company, so I think we're on our own to get the spots out. Can anyone offer any advice on getting rid of these spots. The makeup of the chenille is :48% Rayon, 28% Polyester, and 24% cotton if that helps.Thank you so much in advance.
I would try Rubbing alcohol and water, 1/4Th alcohol to 1/2 water. use in a place you don't see if it works your in business and you can increase the amount. This combination usually gets all stains out. I would follow with a steam cleaning.
Q:So I am interested in finding a sofa/lounger from the Victorian era. I don't necessarily want an original from that era.. a modern duplicate is fine (I assume that will be cheaper than an original). I found some examples on ebay in the UK but I am looking in the US only. Some examples that I like:http://www.ebay .uk/itm/L-FRENCH-LOUIS-STYLE-MEDIUM-SIZE-BLACK-SILVER-DIAMOND-CHAISE-LONGUE-SOFA-FREE-D-/190712591793?pt=UK_Antiques_AntiqueFurniture_SMhash=item2c675b35b1http://www.ebay .uk/itm/Stunning-Antique-Chaise-Longue-/280941657453?pt=UK_Antiques_AntiqueFurniture_SMhash=item41696d7d6d#ht_500wt_1282I am particularly fond of the damask pattern as shown in example 2, but overall I want the look of the sofa in that era.. I can always reupholster it if I don't like the fabric. Thanks for your help.
I've seen furniture of that type (I think they're called fainting couches) in mainstream furniture stores, where the customer can select upholstery fabric, like they can on any sofa or chair, and end up with a custom piece. Start with the most traditional furniture stores where you live. They may not have many, or even any, but a large one should. Skip discount places and department stores' furniture departments. We shopped for this sort of thing for our living room at one point, but in the end decided to go with more modern pieces, which we're still using. I remember we had our pick of four or five at that time, though, and this was in Texas, where you don't think you'll find a lot of Victorian-inspired furniture.
