- Just think of where the bags will have to go once you throw them away versus just throwing the dust away. Dust vs Dust and Bag. Waste are toss into a dump, as they cannot be burned (commonsens) and so, they will add up.

- Most vacuum cleaners have an upholstery attachment that you can put on the hose and use on the couch or other upholstered items. The Kong Zoom Groom or other rubber de-shedding tools like mitts work really well on fabric too. In the future, you may want to train the dog to stay oof the furniture, block his access to it or cover the furniture with a blanket/sheet/petcover to prevent hair from getting on the upholstery in the first place.

- I have a Dyson and wouldn't recommend it. Lots of money for a cheap piece of plastic. The brush doesn't get into the carpet, just skims the surface. As far as suction goes, I have a kenmore that does a better job and contains the dust. The Dyson dust catcher is messy to empty and dust flies wherever you empty it. Also, the Dyson requires constant maintenance in removing pet hair attached to the brush and through the chambers. Hair and dust don't always make it to the chamber. If you have any problems with the Dyson, (mine broke after 6 months of use) you have to send it off and wait 4 - 6 weeks for it's return. My suggestion to you is buy a hepa filtered vacuum with or without bags. You'll save money and get a better built product.

- Yes, any one selling vacuum cleaners door to door will take any old vacuum in trade. Remember though that these people work on high mark up and in turn high commission. Hold out on making a quick sale to get your best deal. Many people are ripped off by door to door sales people who are desperate to make a sale. A fair commission is ok, as every one is entitled to make a living.

- I don't know much about Oreck cleaners themselves, but the Oreck Corporation has my undying respect for what they did in the aftermath of Katrina. David Oreck made the corporate HQ (in southern LA somewhere) available for anyone who needed somewhere to live or to just ride out the storm. He continued to pay people who couldn't come to work and reopened the factory very quickly after the storm. He and his company shelled out millions and I think they deserve our business.
