Is it best to go for a more powerful vacuum cleaner?
The power of a vacuum cleaner’s motor is measured in Watts. The higher the Wattage the better it will clean, as long as the machine is well designed with good air flow and suction power too. However, the higher the wattage, the noisier the machine will be. With upright vacuum cleaners. you don’t need to have so much wattage or suction power as you do with a cylinder cleaner as the dirt has less distance to travel before it reaches the bag or dust container. You don’t always want to have a vacuum cleaner operating at full power for example, when cleaning upholstery or curtains, so it’s useful to be able to adjust the power level yourself.
Which attachments should I look out for?
Most vacuum cleaners come with three attachments, a crevice tool, upholstery and dusting brushes and a small head which is best for vacuuming stairs. You can also get additional turbo brushes which have their own motor for extra suction which are useful for cleaning deep-pile carpets or a power cleaning head which has electrically powered rotating brushes. I have a large house? What should I look out for?
Look for a cleaner with a large cleaning head – this will help cut down the amount of time it takes to vacuum a room. You may also want to consider getting a model with a large capacity dust collector or bag so that you don’t have to empty it as frequently. - It is OK to use the vaccuum as long as it is not wet. I have my litter box in my second washroom - I also have a dust buster in there to pick up any run-a-way litter pieces. If you have a box with a lid, it will help with the spread of litter, also I have a little mat right outside the box, and a bath mat at the threshold of the washroom - I never get litter in the condo itself, just a few specks in the washroom. - Everyone has their preferences, that's what makes a horserace. I've been in the vac repair business for over 35 years, started out with Electrolux, which at that time was one of the best built, longest lasting, best cleaning machines in the industry. They were 98% American built, using American parts in an American city, by American workers. I've repaired and refurbished, rebuilt, just about every possible brand and type of vacuum, steam cleaner, floor scrubber you can name and the one thing that always seemed to stick in my craw about Dyson, is the flat out, bald faced lies that the bonehead who appears on TV and claims to have designed the thing spouts. He always says, It can't clog and lose suction because it has no filters. BUNK! I know of at least 3 filters that are available for Dyson's, (you know, the one that doesn't have any filters to clog). That's pretty much the problem with all bagless cleaners. They MUST be filtered someway, or the dust would be pulled through the motor and be pushed out the exhaust, simple physics. One other thing while we're debunking here, the powdered stuff you sprinkle on the carpet and then sweep up to make them smell nice and fresh, will ruin your vacuum. It's like sucking up flour, or plaster dust. It plugs the pores of the bags used to catch it, or the filters on the bagless units, either way it deprives the motor of the air flow it needs to stay cool enough to last.

- If your vacuum's belt is, in effect, a big black rubber band, then D S is absolutely correct, it is the belt. These things seem to be too short when they are being installed, but are made that way purposely so that there's enough friction against the motor pulley and the agitator to turn the brushes after they are in contact with the carpet. Over a period of time, usually, dependent on how much and how often you use the cleaner, the belt stretches out and loses it's tension on the motor pulley. The pulley is much smaller than the agitator and is usually very shiny and smooth, as opposed to the large wooden or plastic agitator. Actually, the belt is the only part on most cleaners that isn't covered by their warranty, because they are considered expendable. Get a couple new belts, install yourself if you're capable, and keep the second on hand for when the new one strectches out.

- With allergies, buy any one in your price range as long as it has a hepa filter. They filter finer particles than a regular filtered vac. For a reasonably priced name for a starter vac, check the Dirt Devil brands

- No you don't understand. All fans work on the idea of a partial vacuum behind the blades. As the blades turn they push air out in front and suck in air in the back. By the way, my preferred suction cleaner is the Binford 3000 Super Sucker.
