It depends on your floors (carpet or hard surface) the predominate dirt you will be dealing with (pet hair vs. heavy) your willingsness to work with a heavy machine, whether you have one or two machines (floor vs. steps and furniture) etc. From my personal experience, the right vacuum for you is wonderful and should last for years. The wrong one will make you crazy and you will want to throw it out the window.

You may be able to do something with some caulk. It looks like it uses 2 C or D cells now for 3 volts, you could up it to 3 cells for 4.5 volts. The motor may burn out. .
