- Q: I'm getting new carpet installed in a home I'm selling. It's not a high end home, just a 1700 sq foot house that I'll list for $400k. The carpet the carpetman recommended to me is a shaw 18 oz face weight, 48 total weight carpet. To go along with it is 7/16quot; 6lb padding. Is this good enough? Will it look and feel nice enough for the people who come to see the house?
- The basic weight of the carpet and the padding suggested is a good combo. The pad and thickness is above the standard to cover any carpet warranties. 7/16ths is the thickness carpet manufacturers recommend and the least padding you can have ( to cover warranties) is 5 1/2#. Sounds like a decent carpet but w/o seeing the warranties offered Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL
- Q: OK saw an episode of trading spaces a while back and they painted some carpet does anyone know anything about that or staining carpet they did it on real short carpet my carpet is pretty short it is like the carpet they put in apartments point is mine is really bad stained from room mates having pets and my mother when she lived with my having a pet that she never cleaned up after so looking for some ideas any help would be great
- Rent a rug cleaner from your local hardware store, first pretreating the worst spots with a spot remover. And see what this does. Cause in any case you don't want to be breathing the stuff left in the carpet. If you own the place, I'd recommend pulling it up (in a corner or doorway), and seeing what is underneath. Or make a canvas painted rug to go over the area, buy a large canvas (dropcloth or the like) give it a basecoat, then your design and then a few coats of poly. Would be easier to clean up, and not as expensive if you decide to toss it.
- Q: What should i know to avoid being scammed or over charged for a new synthetic (debating between polyester polyester nylon) carpet pad for a Living room stair case. What is the average amount of additional carpeting needed?
- i went to the home depot and they were SOOOOOOOOOO helpful and honest (since they pay an outside contractor to do the work, they dont try to bs you more). it will cost a lot to do stairs... the carpet comes in precut rolls of so many feet. what they SHOULD do is first come out to your house and chart the rooms... the contractor that did ours had a handheld device that he keyed the lengths into and it calculated the best way to lay the carpet out with the least excess... and seaming. if the flooring underneath is bad, they will not install over it. ours was plywood and just fine. ask about tear out and disposal fees for the old carpet. also ask about removal of furnature. the contractor we had charged like $100/item. $50 for a lamp. make sure to get a water retardant pad. do scotchguard!
- Q: I have a light beige and ivory rug with blue and green details. It doesn't match my decor, which is neon pink, bright green, and gold. How can I get rid or dye out the blue parts of the rug? What about bleach?
- You want to do this at a laundromat, biggest machine possible. in cold water, bleach the rug. It may take two tries---using the largest possible machine, try a cup of detergent and a cup of bleach, and see what happens. If you get the desired shade, or lighten it enough, then you can immediately dye it (To a darker shade, of course.) Otherwise, double or triple the bleach, no detergent, and run it again. You may put additional bleach in the compartment where the fabric softener goes, and it will bleach it again on the rinse cycle. After you dye it, as a courteousy to the next person, run it through a cycle with detergent, empty. Or you can do a load of dark, old clothes, like blue jeans. To dry it, lay it on a flat surface, turning it occasionally, and avoid direct sunlight, ideally it will be in the shade on a warm, breezy day. If indoors, dry it on an old sheet on a carpet, with a fan pointed at it, again, turning it every hour or two. Good-luck---Brian
- Q: What do you know about Armenian rug history?
- Sera, my understanding is that you already know about this, just want to inform people , which is very nice... but I asked my teacher and he gave me the following Sources: Weavers, Merchants, and Kings. The Inscribed Rugs of Armenia, by Dr. Lucy Der Manuelian and Dr. Murray L. Eiland, Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, 1984. Rugs of Armenian, Their History and Art, by H. M. Raphaelian, Anatol Sivas Publishers, New Rochelle, New York, 1960. Oriental Rugs and The Stories They Tell by Arthur T. Gregorian, 1967, Nimrod Press, Boston. Oriental Rugs, by Murray L. - Q: 4 years ago I shortly dated someone in the military who purchased a persian rug for me in afghanistan. I felt guilty keeping it, but he insisted I kept it anyways, and am now wanting to sell it, however I know nothing about it. Are there any websites that can teach me anything about the rug, like to verify it really is a persian rug or values?
- You can read full story at WikiPedia about Persian rugs and its type.
- Q: I need an area rug for my living room and here is a picture of my inspiration room compliments of Pottery Barn. The carpet in my living room is like a beigeish oatmeal color. I also have small kids so something that could hide stains easily would be nice. My walls are white and my woods are Cherry...suggestions? Any specific hints in picking out a rug?
- Braided rag rugs are especially nice for concealing stains and blending with most any decor. They're also especially good for anyone with allergies because they do not have backing made with formaldehyde and thus don't give off the awful smells.
- Q: I am re carpeting my attic, is installing a new carpet pad and carpet hard? what about installing carpet on stairs?
- Carpet installation does require some skills and is probably best left to a professional installer. To even attempt to tackle the job yourself you would need to buy several hand tools and rent a power stretcher, a knee kicker, and a seaming iron. Just call around and get a few estimates, carpet installation prices are really pretty reasonable.
- Q: I spilled some dark nail polish on a beige carpet. The polish has hardened making it almost impossible to come out. I've tried nail polish remover, carpet cleaner, bleach and even bathroom cleaners and I don't know what else to try or maybe a different brand?
- that is handy, nail polish remover. get the style with out lanolin, if u can, however any style will paintings. pour a few remover on an historic rag, paintings in circles from the external inward. maintain operating w/ contemporary remover until u get all of it, then use a bit diluted dishwashing liquid in sizzling water and a scrub brush. consider the cleaning soap u r leaving within the carpet from the dishwashing liquid is similar to carpet shampoo, and can depart a place for you to draw in a bit grime, if u do not get so much of it out. inform the carpet purifier subsequent time u have it wiped clean, so he can extract that spot good, with blank water, or do it urself with a condo unit, like from wally international. consider, carpet is close to indestructable, so do not fear an excessive amount of
