- Q: A lot of the mail I get has a plastic window where the recipient's address is shown underneath. Up to this point, I have been tearing out the plastic and throwing just the paper part of the envelope in the recycle. Is that neccessary? To what extent do recycling plants filter what's coming in?
- Its generally OK - but you should check with your local recycling station to be sure. Every place is different. For example, here where we are, they require you to wash everything out well because its a small operation and there are real people around the items, so, to avoid contamination by rodents and bugs, as well as bacteria and the general smell of things, they want you to wash things out thoroughly. However, in the city where my parents live, they can just basically throw most things in the bin, even if they have a bit of food gunk on them. Different rules for different places. So, while it is generally OK to leave the little plastic windows in the envelopes, you specific recycling station may have different requirements.

- Q: I am moving with my family into a house that has large plastic skylights. The trouble is that the former tenant told me that a they are very thermally conductive and contribute to astronomical heating and cooling bills. I spoke with a contractor about it and he said tinting would be the only way to go because normal plastic insulation film wouldn't stick on the windows as they are themselves plastic. But I don't want to tint the windows and lose the lovely light. Does anybody think the plastic film would work or have any other ideas? Thanks for any help you can give!
- You could get window insulation kits that have a sheet of plastic that you can mount to the frame of the inside frame of the window with their double sided tape. They are shrunk by using a hair dryer, this will create a dead air space between the window and the plastic to reduce your heating costs. A roller curtain can be mounted just outside the window frame to reduce the heat that comes in with the sun to help reduce the cooling costs in the summer.

- they can do it --they have to remove the top-remove the stitching from old window and remove window-sew in window- replace top on car--this is NOT cheap but still cheaper than new top=--look for about 400 buck charge--shop all the auto upholstery shops in your area first--talk to your friends -talk to people in auto industry that have used any shops--you are naturally looking for someone that can do the job and do it efficiently and correctly- and at the lowest price==most shops operate on the cheap,good,fast idea--you can have any 2 of these statements--cheap and good not fast--you get the idea
- Q: recently the plastic window in the back of my 91 mazda miata convertable top tore and iv been looking for where i can buy just the plastic window but i cant find it i can only find buying a brand new top all together but i know the top is made to be able to replace only the plastic so if you know where i can find these please help
- There are several types of tops used, and there is no way to guarantee of what replacement window will fit unless you know for sure who made it! Some times the makers name is on the top, however to find out you have to take the top a part. Next thing you need to know is that the labor is just as much for a window replacement as it is for a new top. Another thing to think about is that many times a complete top is less then 100 dollars more then just the replacement window. That is why I just replace the complete top my self, and use what I would have paid someone else to do the job to buy new cables and a rain rail. The first link is to directions on how one person did the job, I have read three different methods. However because of how the top was put on by the last person to do the job none of the worked exactly as published. The second link is to a site that has replacement windows, there are others out there. Note the one there is for the Robins Top, if it is factory or any other makers top, it will not fit. Replacement tops start at about 150 dollars and go on up. I have bought mine from Dave on OKorder. He used to carry a three window model and that was what I bought. I like his service and price. - Sounds like you are in an old house with single pane windows. Go to Home Depot and talk to them about weather stripping your windows and doors. Check all the outlets on outside walls too. They make an insert you can put under the cover plate to stop drafts. You might look into the plastic that you heat up and it forms a tight seal on the windows. Insulated drapes would help a lot as well. Good Luck!!
- Q: I have a plastic windshield that I want to tint, but have run into some problems. I tried getting a tint shop to place a film over it, but the surface was too curved. Is there another method that I can try? Is there any kind of spray or dye? Also, I would like mirror tint. Is that possible? The plastic can flex a little, so it has to be able to withstand that.I don't have to worry about whether or not the tint complies with the law. So, there are no restrictions.
- If it's plastic, you can spray tinted clearcoat over it. Some films should work. It's what people do when tinting tail lights.
