Q:We live in an old, very poorly insulated house, and it's very drafty/cold during the winter. We've tried two-sided insulating tape that you put in the window sills, caulk strips that you put around the frame, etc. and none of it works. Is it worth the money to buy the plastic that you can put over the outside of your windows? The draft seems to be coming from where the window itself meets the sill, but also around the perimeter of the window (where the edging/molding is attached to the wall). I've read a few articles online about quot;how toquot; install plastic, but they all say that the plastic comes in kits and you need to attach it with the included double sided tape to your wooden window frame. our house is brick and there's not much of a frame outside. What little wood there is has been painted over many times, and I doubt tape would stick to it. Should I try to do it anyway? Is it worth the cost?
You can caulk around the windows first. That should have been done at instalation. If you need to, you can use 100% silicone to adhear the plastic to plastic and it is easily removed in the spring. Do a test section and let it cure for 48 hours and see how it holds and removes. I never did it but I do alot of caulking. If you dont seal the draft, no matter what you do, it will eventually blow off.
Q:Most of the windows in our home are pretty drafty. We've been putting up the thin, shrink with a hair dryer Duck plastic in our windows for winter to help with the drafts. I want to make some window quilts for this winter to help, but I'm not sure how to combine them with the plastic, or if we should just use them with out the plastic. Would it be more effective to plastic right around the window, inside of the frame, and then hang the quilt right on top of the plastic, or hang the quilt outside the frame, or just hang the quilt directly on the window with out the plastic?
At the home improvement store there is weather stripping that can help. Also caulking the windows. I'd make the quilts to cover the window with a little fullness to cover the frame. Hope this is helpful..Roxanne
Q:I need to put plastic on my windows for the winter. It never looks right, and they always pop off during stormy cold winter weather. Any advice?
Are you using the shrink wrap type plastic (you use a hair dryer to shrink it down)? I have had good experiences from this stuff, but if you can't get a very nice seal between the plastic and the window frame then it's not going to help much. Is the plastic popping off right away, like while you are blow drying it, or later like the next day or a month later? The problem could be from dust or grime or maybe an oily buildup (especially near kitchens) on the window sills and frames. If this is causing your problems, then a good no residue degreasing cleanser could help you a lot. If that doesn't help, then maybe the particular paint on your sills and frames doesn't work well with the plastic attaching stuff. If you can get the plastic in place and start the shrink wrap process maybe you can shrink it a little less, so there won't be quite so much tension on it but it will still be in place and insulating your house. edit: yes the shrinkwrap goes inside the house over the windows and yes it will work fine. Why did this other dude think i was talking about outside? Cause I mentioned dust and grime? The don't know indoors can get dirty, too?
Q:I need to mask some windows off using just painters plastic and 2quot; tape. My problem is where I'm supose to lay the tape is flush with the glass. Am I supose to cut the plastic to size, tape up the corners and then tape seams? Sorry, new to airless.
You got it Tape windows first, use a razor knife for corners. Now tape plastic to the tape on windows. Cut plastic smaller then window so you tape on tape.
Q:is there any way to clean the faded plastic door windows on my canvas doors? we really cant afford new doors right now at 400 a whack, there faded by the sun bad.thanks
I don't think you are going to get something that will get them clean you can try brasso use a soft backing so you dont scratch the back
Q:Are envelopes with plastic windows recyclable?
I would say yes they are recycable.
Q:I have tried chlorox and water and some parts turned pink. Help me somebody!
You could try oxyclean, I also love Mr. Clean erasers. If the bleach turned the vinal pink I would not use any other bleach product. Oxyclean or Mr. Clean erasers should not have that effect. I have also used a product called awesome that I got at the dollar store that worked on some tough stuff without discoloring. Good luck and enjoy your RV.
Q:The city requires me to separate paper and plastic into two different bins. I have been tearing the plastic windows out of envelopes (you know the kind you get from businesses) before sticking them into the paper bin. Do I even have to do this? And if I do, can I put the plastic window part I rip out into the plastic recycling bin?
You don't have to do this, but it will be easier for the city recycling center to recycle it. Yes, you can put the plastic window part into the plastic recycling bin. :D
Q:I'm tired of buying those window insulation kits that cost a lot and have a postage stamp's worth of plastic inside that covers maybe 1 1/2 windows. Is there a way to buy that type of plastic in bulk from somewhere? What is the brand, and where do they sell it?
You can apply Duck Roll-On 3-Window Film or 3M window insulation Kit this product will increase the insulation value in your windows. You can purchase this product at your local hardware store.
Q:I accidently put window paint on the back window of my friend's convertible. Now he says its stained, I really need to get it off. Any ideas?!
The paint you used probably changed the chemical makeup of the plastic window and it isn't a stain at all. It's permanent. It pretty much burned an image into the plastic. You're looking at replacing it, I'm afraid.
