Q: I saw an online video that we can go to our local home depot etc and buy kits where we use a blow drying and put plastic on the inside of our windows. How much does this really help in saving on energy costs for those of you who know this kind of stuff. I am on a very limited budget, so I am looking at those,
anything that will add another layer of protection, is going to save you dollars and give you comfort
Q: The city requires me to separate paper and plastic into two different bins. I have been tearing the plastic windows out of envelopes (you know the kind you get from businesses) before sticking them into the paper bin. Do I even have to do this? And if I do, can I put the plastic window part I rip out into the plastic recycling bin?
Generally, recycling authorities will tell you stuff like this if its important. I would just put the whole envelope in the paper recycling. My authority (Edinburgh) doesn't accept envelopes at all, though, because of the glue!
Q: I have yucky shades on my windows dead bugs all around my windows. They are old windows so I bought an insulation kit to do the windows. It says I will need to blow dry. What if I don't want to touch the disgusting shades my landlord said be would replace when I moved in ? I am kind of stuck living here so until I can find a place a roommate, I want to seal the windows. shades completely. They have poor insulation a handful bugs come in every hour.Do you think the plastic will work without shrinking it with a blowdryer? There are slice webs around my window so I am disgusted.
Actually you can go with this approach, but you must ask an expert before applying anything. Your windows will look great, and they will be highly protective after applying plastic on them. But be careful and do it properly.
Q: Yo, i am a proud owner of a 1997 Jeep Wrangler. I was wondering if it is possible to tint the plastic windows using a self tint kit found at an auto store. Ive been looking for the answer online and can only find tutorials on how to use the tint on regular glass car windows. Someone please help me out before i buy the tint and try it myself and end up ruining my windows. thanks
All other standard polyester films will fail on lastic because of out gassing of the plastic.
Q: My windows seem to be extra drafty this year... It seems like one of them is open, but I can't find anything wrong with them. Anyhow, my heat is kicking on like every 15 minutes! I don't wanna get a $300 gas bill every month till winter is over... I'm thinking about putting plastic up on the windows --- How do I do this? What do I use?It seems so ghetto, but oh well.I live in an apartment building too btw..
Try using the insulating strips first. I put these in my windows and it seem to help a lot. You just put them where the window hits the sill when it closes. If it doesn't help you can always add on the plastic. Also put insulating foam in your outlets and switch plates that are on an outside wall. These are dirt cheap and cut to fit right in the outlet.
Q: There is a tear in my drivers side window at the bottom where the plastic is covered by the fabric, but the fabric is coming lose and the tear is starting to show and open itself to elements. Also, this window zipper only closes and opens one way, going the other way the teeth will not connect, any ideas? Also, there is a larger 4-5 inch tear in my rear plastic window right under where the zipper releases the plastic from the fabric. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
They have replacement windows and doors at very affordable prices and will ship them to you.
Q: Is there a way to get the plastic windows on my convertible clear again without replacing.?
go to a auto glass shop and if theyre not too messed up you can get a polisher to use with a buffer
Q: Should I insulate just my single pane windows or my new windows as well? Also should I put the plastic on the inside, outside or both? Thanks.
Plastic on the inside. Putting it outside will subject it to wind and weather. It will be noisier and will not last all winter. If your new windows are double or triple pane, I would not do them. Look for places where drafts come in around windows, doors, fireplaces. Many of these can be sealed with caulk and are very efficient.
Q: Is plastic on my windows just as good a drapes for the winter?
Much, Much better -- and wait -- 3M makes a plastic just for windows -- just get right size -- cut to size, tape, and use hair dryer on it to tighten it. I'm telling you that people can't even see that it is there. I've had it on a 6' X 4' bay window in living room and left it up during summer it was so invisible. It's clear as a window and tight as hell.
Q: If I do weather stripping and seal the windows with plastic, is that better than doing just one, or redundant?
The plastic window kits that shrink (via a hairdryer) work well. No need to weatherstrip them as well.
