- Q: I just had my 30 yr old storm windows replaced with nice double pain, double glazed, argon filled windows in November. HUGE IMPROVEMENT! But now that i am used to comfort level and energy savings that these windows have made to my home. I find myself looking for the tiny amounts of cool air that penetrates into my home. And I still have this habit of wanting to put plastic over my windows. Do you think adding the plastic now would be overkill? Or would the energy savings still out way the cost of the plastic this first week on January?
- I think you would be wasting your money. Wait until spring and then go outside and caulk around your windows if you see holes
- Q: The city requires me to separate paper and plastic into two different bins. I have been tearing the plastic windows out of envelopes (you know the kind you get from businesses) before sticking them into the paper bin. Do I even have to do this? And if I do, can I put the plastic window part I rip out into the plastic recycling bin?
- Generally, recycling authorities will tell you stuff like this if its important. I would just put the whole envelope in the paper recycling. My authority (Edinburgh) doesn't accept envelopes at all, though, because of the glue!
- Q: Where can I buy some plastic to put up to my windows for the winter? ?
- Stores like Lowes, Home Depot and hardware, have whole plastic kits to furnish low efficient windows in winter. Just go to the seasonal department and ask one of the associates for. Good luck...!
- Q: So there I was today sorting and paying my bills, throwing away all those ads and credit offers (yes I shred the stuff that could get me in trouble) and I end up with a large amount of those envelopes with plastic windows in them. Some of the mail have two, one that I open and one I'm supposed to send something to the company. Fat chance for them, I pay my bills on the internet and can't afford to get books and magazines through the mail. That's what libraries are for. I used to rip out the little windows and recycle but now they are glued in so tight they seem fused. So what do you say?a. toss themb. recycle with windowsc. The reclying companies love those little windows they give body to recycled cardboard and toilet paper !
- b) Post-consumer paper mills have systems that can take out these small amounts of contaminants. What they can't recycle is any paper that won't disolve in water. To test just feel for a waxy or plastic feel. A good example is the wrapper that comes on reams of paper.
- Q: I don't know what they mean by 'apply tape to bottom of protruding sill.' I have a sill, do they mean on the surface of it, or below the sill on the wall, or should i just put the tape around the window and apply the plastic, just not sure how to handle the sill...thanks...
- it normally goes on the top, bottom and sides of the entire window. You can, however, put it on the molding also. As long as you get a nice tight seat to prevent cold air from leaking into house, you're good.
- Q: I figure that the little windows are plastic, not paper, and shouldn't be included with the paper products in the bins at the recycling centers. Am I right or wrong? It takes a lot of extra time to sort through all the junk mail in order to discard these envelopes.
- Yes your right to do that! I reuse my envelopes, just open them carefully then stick a label over the window and VOILA a new envelope! I'm not tight, I'm eco friendly!
- Q: So we just moved into an old home that is notorious for being difficult to keep warm in the winter. The previous tenants had plastic on the windows to keep the cold out. Well, its July here and keeping the cold out is no longer a concern. The plastic looks terrible and if its not serving a purpose, I'd like to take it down for the summer and fall season. So, is the plastic keeping the heat out right now? Does it serve a purpose?
- gives a dead space between the inside and out air. if you are running AC leave it. Cooling could cost as much as heat. If you take it down now, winter will find you putting something else up like it. There are some clear plastics you could install neatly and it looks like glass.
- Q: Our landlord is obsessed with everything looking the same, but people here want to put up their own window treatments. What are tenant rights in this situation?
- Sorry but I don't understand the problem. Put curtains up over them.
- Q: I'm moving out of my apartment in a couple weeks and i have these plastic-like window blinds around the place. I was wondering if anyone knew how to get these things clean without taking them down? They're supposed to be white but I'm noticing a couple yellowish-brownish stains on them. I've tried all sorts of chemicals to try and get these things cleaned. No luck at all.
- I have the same problem with mine. I've tried everything! Cleaning products you use to clean the kitchen and floors, vinegar, bleach, Oxiclean, etc... Nothing I've tried has even faded the stains. I have finally given up and believe the only way to get rid of the stains, is to replace the blinds with new ones.
- Q: Would a Jeep Wrangler with glass windows be any less noisy than a model with plastic windows?
- Even with a soft top, glass windows on the full size hard doors makes for a much more quiet ride with the top up than a Jeep with half doors and the plastic windows. Plus, the hard doors will not flap at speeds in excess of 60 MPH as the soft portion of the half doors will. Not much of an issue unless it is winter and the heat quickly escapes from your Jeep while cruising down the highway. Even on the TJ with the more advanced door frame assembly, the glass is much more advantageous with the soft top. With the hard top, the CJ, YJ, and TJ are all about the same.
